Default Water pump to radiator clearence

Is there a general measurement of how far the nut that holds the fan blade on a water pump should be from the radiator inner face?? We have 5 trucks and cars in the shop right now, and all have slightly different measurements of the distance.

Thanks!

Bob, this subject was discussed in some detail, with pictures, several months ago. You might want to try a search to track it down, though I know that can be challenging here, I have trouble with it. Several explanations were given such as repro fans not fitting the water pump shaft correctly, water pump shafts that were too long, different front end support springs, etc.

I believe the controlling factor is how far the impeller is pressed on to the shaft, that determines how much shaft protrudes from the front of the housing and how close the fan nut is to the radiator.

I got 3/4 of an inch. You still have to move radiator ahead a little to get the pump out. Just enough that you have to loosen the top hose clamp and un-do the support rods. It's about 3/8 ths of an inch short to not screw up the radiator fins.
