33 day Hershey road trip
My nephew and I have booked tickets to the USA and plan on driving from LA to San Francisco and onto Sacramento before traveling East towards Hershey for the Fall swap meet. We have no set route as yet and I wonder what Fordbarner's rate as must do's along the way.

Re: 33 day Hershey road trip
How much time do you have before you get to Hershey? There are lots of National Parks along the way.

Re: 33 day Hershey road trip
Going over the Sierras and Rockies is aboslutely stunningly georgous!!!! Just watch the down hill portions as they can get kinda steep. However, when you hit the plains it is a straight shot and kinda boring (did that trip twice when I moved). I agree with Frank Miller, the Henry Ford Museum is a an absolute must! Sacramento has the Towe Ford Museum. If you PM me I can get you some stuff for the San Francisco bay area-I live in Oakland.

Re: 33 day Hershey road trip
There is a very good, free antique auto museum in Coralville, Iowa and it's right off Interstate 80-and check out the I 80 truck stop that is the world's largest-just for fun. The Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana is, flat-out, the best done car museum I have ever been in and the National Automotive and Truck Museum is right behind it. The AACA Museum in Hershey is also a must see since you will be right there.
Oh, and you'd better check out Hershey area motels now for the fall meet. I suspect most are already booked and you could find yourself staying in Harrisburg or Lancaster-or Baltimore or Philadelphia. Last edited by 5window; 05-24-2010 at 11:27 AM. |

Make sure ya carry spare gas between Carson City and Ely, NV as there are some long, long, long stretches between gas stations there. When ya hit Ely, NV take a ride on their "Ghost train" a fully operational staem train and steam era railroad yard.

Re: 33 day Hershey road trip
If you would join the USA AAA organization, you can get a lot of info about many things as you go east. Also if you give them a planned route, they will give you all the maps and tour books for everything along the way. To join for a year I think it is about $60 to $90 USD. As you go across the country you will see corn, corn, corn, corn, corn and more corn. The stuff that makes the stuff that wrecks our gasoline. Have a nice trip.

"Thanks, I think our AA is aligned with your AAA"
Spider, Here in the USA when someone uses the term "AA" it stands for "Alcoholics Anonamous" which is not afilliated with "AAA" ! |

Re: 33 day Hershey road trip
The Petersen Museum in LA is a must see
http://www.petersen.org/ From there head to The Early Ford Store in San Dimas http://www.earlyfordstore.com/ Real close is the NHRA Museum in Pomona http://www.museum.nhra.com/ Heading north outta LA is the Neuthercutt Collection. The Museum is free and open to the public BUT if you call ahead of time and make an appointment you can see the private stuff across the street. This is a MUST. http://nethercuttcollection.org/ While continuing north along the Pacific Coast highway make sure you stop and check out Hurst Castle http://www.hearstcastle.org/ No trip to San Fransisco is complete without a stop at Brizo's Streetrods. Take the guys some donuts and you'll be celebrities and have the run of the place. Please tell Steve Lord Denise from Detroit says "hi". http://www.roybriziostreetrods.com/home.htm Also in the SF area is the Blackhawk Collection. Just stunning. http://www.blackhawkcollection.com/ I'm going to assume you will travel across I-80 from Sacramento, CA to Hershey, PA with litle detours along the way. Not much between Saco and Lincoln BUT just a couple of miles off the interstate near Wendover, UT is the Bonneville Salt Flats and the home of landspeed racing. It's a magical place rich in hot rod history. Drive to the end of the road at least just to try to capture the feel of the place. As you are traveling across I-80 Speedy Bill Smith's collection, The Museum of America Speed in Lincoln, NE is a MUST see. Again call ahead of time, ask for John, tell him you are a friend of mine, and you will get a personal tour. http://www.museumofamericanspeed.com/ Once in Indiana head south first to Inianapolis, and go to the Indy Motor Speedway http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.../35204-Museum/ Then straigh north to Auburn, IN and like others have said the Auburn, Cord, Dussy Museum is outstanding http://www.automobilemuseum.org/Pages/default.aspx Continue north into Michigan and hit the Gilmore Museum http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/ From there you would head due east into the Metro Detroit Area and the Henry Ford Museum. If you have time you should plan on a full day at the Museum and weather permitting a full day in Greenfield Village http://www.thehenryford.org/ If you do make it to the Detroit area please let me know and we can do dinner one evening. Also, if you'd like to use my home as a mail to point for car parts that you are ordering and taking back with you by all means just let me know and I'll PM you my address. I will continue to add to the list today as time permits
