Default Disassemble Tudor Body

I am in the process of restoring a 1929 Ford Model A Tudor and I am working on repairing the body. It is very rusty with some original paint on it. I have started the exterior stripping of it with a sander and 80 grit sandpaper, which is going along well. However, when I look at the interior I am wondering how I am going to tackle that, especially around the panel joints.

Has anyone taken apart complete a Tudor body to strip and repair all the rusty areas? Should this be something I look to do or just do what I can? I am not looking for this to be a professional-level restoration either.

For the inside, I would spray it down with "Ospho". Ospho is phosphoric acid and with convert the rust from iron oxide to phosphoric oxide which is not only neutral (does not corrode metal) it protects the metal from corrosion. The best way, IMO to stop rust in hard to reach (impossible to reach) places like behind braces. It can be painted over with most paints but it's a good idea to confirm with the manufacturer of the paint you plan to use.

Welcome to the Barn! Another way to do it that might be faster is to blast it and then wash it down with ospho. EST of both worlds.

I would recommend that you NOT use 80 grit as this creates localized heat in the metal. and it also removes metal. Media blasting with aluminum oxide and low pressure (about 40 psi) is a better way. The Phosphoric is a good way to remove the rust however it will not remove the paint.

I used paint stripper on everything. Scraped off real easy. For the rust I bought food grade phosphoric acid by the gallon from a vendor on Amazon. I kept the metal wet with a spray bottle and the phosphoric acid diluted. My car had been previously media blasted and it was harder to work with than the areas that were left alone and painted over, under the fenders door jambs inside of body.

I disassembled my L31 Tudor from the sub frame, quarter panels , the back panel, cowl assembly. It was a big long job! All of the pieces I took and had chemically stripped. There are rivets, spot welds that hold the body on to the subframe. If you go this far, I would make a flat top work platform on wheels and bolt or screw the body subframe to it. Going back together every seam was prepped and then primed and painted. You will need to dedicate a lot of man hours.

Thanks for asking this question. I was wondering the same thing. Mine is FAR worse than yours.

Buy a cheap pot, set up a cheap booth and spend a few months suited up sweating in the summer heat, blasting your body clean.. or pay the local cat a few hundred to do it at his shop.. your choice.. you cant leave it...rust never sleeps..

Good luck on your project which ever way you go. I want to restore a car someday so I'm reading and looking up all the information before hand to know what I'm going to be getting myself into.
