Default Transmission Fluid

Whats the best way to drain and refill the transmission?? Its been a long time, but is there a plug on the bottom to drain it and can you just pour it out from the can?

Thanks,
Tom...

Well for me, I got her up on all four jack stands. Sitting level.
Ran her in 2nd till warm. Dumped out the old 600w.
Then refilled with new 80/90 hypoide stuff, plugged her up again.
Ran her till warm [20 minutes].
Dumped out this lube.
Let her drain for an hour.
Pumped in another virgin load of 600w.
Take her off the jack stands.
Good for another couple of years.
I also did the rear axle the same way at the same time.
And topped off the steering box with 600w.

Hint: I have a 1 qt bottle with a plunger pump that screws on to the bottle [a lower end out board oil change kit from West Marine] and has a 18 inch hose that I slip into the fill hole and squeeze in all I can till the lube comes out the fill hole.
Let her drip a bit and plug it up. It's a good work out for the thumb!!

I don't pull the floor boards or take the tranny top off. I just might drop something in there. I tried mean-'O-Mr Gravity and the funnel...way too slow and messy.

I also pulled a magnate through the drained oil to see if any ferrous specks stuck to the magnate. Nothing.

skip.

I have always had good luck with the plug on the bottom for draining, for filling the easiest has been when i had the shifter tower off and poured the oil in the top before reinstalling the tower, the next easiest is using the fill plug with a funnel when the floorboard is out.
The method I like the least is laying on my back pushing the oil in with a suction gun---it is slow and messy.

Good money well spent is the tranny dipstick kit. Cut out the floorboard (template), fix the tube into the pour hole. Ask your 600 wt.vendor for a screw on pour spout (think old fashioned plastic mustard bottle) and top ups/refills are simple. Use a funnel to add a little STP if so inclined. Simple to check fluid level and ensure you aren't losing fluid.

Default Warming the 600W

I have warmed up the 600W oil in the microwave prior to filling the trans/diff.

a 4 cup kitchen measuring cup for 7 minutes in the microwave. The oil then pours nicely into the suction gun and presses easily into the trans or differential.

Hope this helps

I HAD one of those tranny dip sticks but I removed it, keeping the handy inspection port in the floorboard similar to the battery inspection port. The dip stick with its six inch plumbing nipple tube was a pain compared to just using a long funnel and looking to see the fluid level in the tranny.

Ford said to drain the transmission, flush with kerosene, then refill with 600W oil, which is about the same as 240 weight gear oil.

NEVER user any type of Hypoid oil in the trans or rear end.
!! It will not cling to the gear faces and you will destroy the case hardening.
