Painting a steering wheel
Has anyone tried to paint a 28/29 steering wheel to get the original semi gloss black like they were originally? I don't know if paint would work to make the steering wheel look like an original Ford steering wheel. Any ideas?

The steering wheels were not painted originally. If you were to look closly at an original you would see flakes in the material. I would just pick any semi gloss paint for a driver. Keep in clean and even waxed to protect the paint.

I found that if you put a good clear coat on it that it will last longer, not bomb can style but two part clear coat, the reason is oil from you hands will melt and ruin the bomb can style just my two cents

Re: Painting a steering wheel
The original soybean plastic wheel had a natural finish and was not painted. On wheels that I have repaired, I use PPG's DP-90 epoxy black primer. It has a satin finish and comes close to the appearance of the original plastic. A careful rubdown with very fine steel wool enhances the appearance. Gar

I, too, have used the PPG DP-90 epoxy primer, then followed with several coats of spray bomb Flat Clear. Still looks good after almost 5 years

lazy man's way: no paint
just clean it off with acetone when needed to keep it from getting sticky or making your hands dirty.
when we bought our Town Sedan, the steering wheel had been polished or something and was way too shiny. I worked it over with 1000 grit wet-dry sandpaper to get the right look. |
