Default Control Rods

I'm just a little curious about how (if at all) to keep the control rods from scratching the paint on the top of the steering column. Is there no way to avoid it? I'm not too concerned about fixing my current problem but I would like to know for future reference.

I have never done it before, but a little grease might keep it nicer longer. Otherwise I don't see how you can keep the paint from being scraped off the peaks of the serrations.

Maybe try.... after the paint is worn off in its path, try coating with a Sharpie permanent marker, or even some other type of dryable ink instead of paint with a thick film layer.?

I'm tempted to say "something," but I don't want to risk spoiling my "REPUTATION" here on the Barn! Bill W.

HAHA, after being on the HAMB for 8+ years this place seems a little "soft" sometimes to me. I cant believe anyone cares about the height of their bud vase or what the proper way is to orient their motor mount saftey wire so some judge at a car show wont dock them a few points.

I powder coat mine. Works really well. You could also brush on a thin coat of black Por15. That stuff is as hard as a brick and doesnt leave brush strokes.

Muttley,
It gets exciting sometimes, they've even been known to call "THE COPS" on us! Bill W, The Ghost, & The Vicious Rat Terrier.

The grooves or notches look much sharper and deeper than the ones on my nicely worn column. When its smoother, the paint stay's on.

I like the Sharpie idea for a simple fix. Thank you everyone.

Weaken the springs on the bottom so not as much pressure is applied.

You don't even have to twink the springs. All I did was just bend the rods enough so they don't touch the quadrants. If you can get them close enough nobody will notice. You wont get the clicking noise but they will stay looking good. Richard/Ca.

Gerard,
Love your humor, and remember, our king pins are slowly wearing out, along with carb shaft bushings, ammeter shaft bearings, bulb filaments slowly oxidizing and a bucket full of other stuff---Woe is me! Maybe I should put'er up on BLOCKS!
I'll bet there's someone out there that re-varnishes the soles of his $319.00 Florsheim shoes, to keep them new lookin' & dangerously SLIPPERY!
