Re: 32 spring bushings
I use NOS ones (the '33 and up version lined with asbestos), but they are getting to be very scarce, especially the early form with the longer threads and holes for cotter pins.

Re: 32 spring bushings
If you want original type, use what you have.
If you want the best, get or make some from moly filled Delrin and fit them to a slight hand push fit in BOTH the spring and the hanger. Use shackle pins that are drilled for grease fittings. These bushings will outlast the car. |

Re: 32 spring bushings
i agree, if its a show car, well, original is the way to go. but, for a driver the new stuff is much easier to deal with, and last a long time

Re: 32 spring bushings
There's a reason why the engineers designed these to be a press fit. Without that proper fit, the bushings don't do what they need to do - namely, offer torsional twist to aid the return of the spring to it's proper ride height.
I shake my head at the guys that grind these down to make for an easier installation. Why replace the old ones when you are destroying the new ones prior to installing? There's "easy" and there's "correct". Not always are they one and the same.

Re: 32 spring bushings
That torsional effect is lost with the modern plastic/rubber three-piece bushings.

Re: 32 spring bushings
I would try "barnfind08" on this forum as suggested in post #6. He has a company called "Southside Obsolete" that has a lot of NOS parts.

Re: 32 spring bushings
If you get original or NORS shackle bushings, check out Kube's post several years ago about how to install them correctly. I don't have the KR WIlson tools for the job, so I bought a cheap ball joint press, and made several driver mandrels and a receiver for the press on the lathe, and it works fine. If you have the "Ford Cars & Trucks" service manual there is good illustration of the tools and process for the earlier cars like the '32 on page 444, figure 219. Someone may have way of posting that on the barn.

Re: 32 spring bushings
Beware of any NORS bushings with rubber linings as likely the rubber has deteriorated and they will quickly fail.

Re: 32 spring bushings
Yes. You can look at the ends and see the rubber or the asbestos.
I agree with DavidG 100% that old stock with rubber is not a good choice for a car that will be driven.

Re: 32 spring bushings
The ends are rolled over and what looks like string in there is the asbestos.

Re: 32 spring bushings
David,Were the nos asbestos ones drilled for cotter pin? I have the tools to install,is there a certain position the square shoulder on the studs should be turned or do the studs turn inside of bushing? thanks

Re: 32 spring bushings
NOS studs are found in both forms, the original 1933 form with long threads with a hole for a cotter pin and the later production/service version with shorter threaded end studs and no cotter pin holes as they were made to be used with Marsden locking nuts. If you are very careful, you can add the holes for cotter pins on the later version.
I do not believe that any great care was taken originally to line up the cotter pin holes on the spring perch and main spring leaf bushing studs. Likely some attention was paid to the initial alignment of the square portion of the studs to facilitate the installation of the figure eight bars linking the bushing studs together, but not to the cotter pin holes. Once installed, the studs inside the bushings can be turned, although I think it best to try and minimize the need to do so. |

Re: 32 spring bushings
Here are the 2 information pages on installing shackle pins correctly. The 1st is page 444 from the Ford Service Book illustrating the KR Wilson tool for removing & installing shackles in the earlier cars, of which the '32 is one. It's a little easier than in later cars which require different tool. The 2nd is Kube's post on "Installing Shackle Pins Correctly". The reason you may not have been able to find the post is it goes back to 2009, which could be before the Fordbarn changed hands.

Randall, Was there enough length in the threaded part to drill a 1/8" cotter hole, for a castellated nut, as in the original drilled ones? The undrilled ones are shorter so it seemed to me that a smaller 3/32" cotter hole might be needed to leave enough meat at the end. John

Re: 32 spring bushings
It seems to me that some replacement shackle studs came with "marsden" nuts that are self locking and do not require a cotter pin. That may be why no holes for cotter pins. Unless it's for points, to me a cotter pin is an unnecessary evil.
