Water capacity of motor and radiator
I have distilled water only in my pickup. Am sending it to an area that has freezing temperatures. Want to add antifreeze. What ratio of water to antifreeze? What is the total capacity of liquid?

Re: Water capacity of motor and radiator
A gallon of antifreeze to replace a gallon of water in the system should put you where you are protected to well below zero F.

Re: Water capacity of motor and radiator
Most/all antifreeze containers have a chart showing the amount needed for a particular temperature.
A very good and easy to remember ratio is 50/50 water/antifreeze, resulting in about -35 F protection, along with very good rust prevention and increased boiling point. Since most flathead powered vehicles have 20 to 22 quart cooling systems, a minimum of 2 1/2 gallons of antifreeze would be needed, but it really depends on how much protection your pickup needs. I pre-mix coolant for all my vehicles so I always have 50/50 regardless of their individual capacities. |

and if you're not sure about the strength of your mix, you can buy an expensive tester at your local parts store....Mike

Re: Water capacity of motor and radiator
Here's a typical chart. I assumed the same 20 - 22 qt capacity when I said to put in a gallon, which would be about a 20% mix. Gives protection down to about (-8) deg Celsius, I read off the wrong scale! So yeah, you probably want a little more than a gallon in there.
