Default Stock fuel pump

I am in the process of gutting this to allow the electric pump to push the fuel thru to the carbs. What is the purpose of the adjustable valve as shown. Not seen one before.

That pump is just like the one I did for the '39 LZ, the "adjustable valve" is a drain. As long as you keep it closed, it should not present a problem. I coated the gasket under the dome with Indian Head Shellac, as that is the only place fuel can leak out of once you block off the interior portion of the upper pump body section.

I partly agree with my friend Tony, the OEM mechanical fuel pumps are excellent however, the "new" Corn Gas, with it lower flash point, so to speak, will cause Vapor Lock and, even the best built mechanical fuel pump will have a hard time pulling liquid fuel from the tank and delivering it to the carb. There are those (although their numbers are diminishing) that deny the existence of Vapor Lock and emphatically insist that they have never experienced Vapor Lock... To them I say "just give it a chance, if you really drive your Flathead, when the right conditions hit, you will be visited by the Vapor Lock Demon!" And the only effective exorcism I've found, is the installation of an electric fuel pump. Amen.

Do you really know what vapor-lock is ???? I do !!!
I have driven my stock 36 ford in 2 countries & 2 hemispheres with a stock fuel pump , I just started it tonight for the first time since Christmas by just winding it over until it picked up fuel from the tank with the stock pump !!! Never a problem !! Optima battery & never seen a charger of any kind ! Runs great on 100* days also !!
vapor-lock does exist but can be prevented or eliminated . We have been through this over the years with our race cars & have learned to understand it well & make sure it never creates a problem for us.
Maybe you need to learn or understand what "Vapor Lock" really is & what causes it & how to correctly rebuild a fuel pump before running off at the mouth !
Cheers
Tony
ps let me know if I can help you !

Talk about running off at the mouth ! I guess all of the hundreds of drivers of all makes of old cars as well as dozens of articles, some by petroleum companies, on vapor-lock are full of s...
I am glad that you have had such good luck with Ethanol. Count your self very lucky.
