Default Steering Wheel Removal

Does anyone have any tips on how to get a steering wheel off? Or maybe someone in the San Diego area who has a steering wheel puller I could use?

On my 31 PU, I had to take the whole column to a machine shop to get it off. They ended up drilling and tapping holes under the horn/light switch ring and using a "real" steering wheel puller. The one I bought that is supposedly made for Model A steering wheels just didn't cut it. Make sure that you leave the nut on the threads and protect it well with a washer or something, otherwise you will smash the threads to smitherines.

I removed mine with the steering column out of the car using the method from Jim Schild's book. I sat on a stool set on a workbench so the column could hang free with the steering wheel on my lap. With the threads protected, I gave it a good solid rap with a large hammer. The wheel popped loose. I'm sure some penetrating oil would help. Good luck. Howie

Look in Bratton's catalog. I bought one a few months ago. It worked well on a '30 column. I forget how much it was.

What ever you do don't try to wiggle it off while someone is taping on the back side of it with a hammer. Unless you have it pillow over your face. Don't ask me how I know Ouch!

Casey, I checked out your you tube production and was wondering how much farther you got on the car since your filming. Looks like you have a nice car to work with. Will you be taking any more pictures.

I ground down a Pickle Fork to remove a 28-29 steering wheel. Made it thin enough to just start between the wheel at the metal center and the bushing, removed the nut off the shaft; by inserting the pickle fork from the bottom it did not contact the spark and throttle brackets. As I tapped lightly the tapered section of the pickle fork moved in and slowly raised the wheel off the spline. Using this method, did not have to worry about damaging the threads on the shaft.
