Mounting tires

Are there any special tricks or tips on mounting the tires onto the wheel? A 21" wheel particularly.

I changed all five of mine...over two days....the last one was the easiest as you might expect.

I found that re-mounting an old tire was a lot easier than mounting a new tire...

I also used the left rear as my tire mounting fixture and rotated all the wheels there as the fronts kept turning..I guess I could have tied the steering wheel in place...

There are several videos and I watched many of them, all were helpful in one way or another.

On a couple of wheels I had to break the inside bead with a dead-blow hammer...

I inserted the tubes into the new tires first, inflated them to several pounds and made sure they were straight(ie no folds) inside the tire before de-flating and mounting.

Use plenty of lube! I tried using minimal lube and it wasn't working that well but by the last tire I was getting pretty generous, and it was much easier ...

All good tips. ALWAYS install new tubes with new tires. Cheap insurance.

Putting an old Lester on my 16" spare, I sprayed it with PAM & she went on, with just my BARE HANDS!

Very good point. Will save you problems down the road when one of these folds starts to leak-and they do after a period of time!

Make sure you use rim liners. I used the garbage bag method with Murphys vegetable oil soap with success. I did this with the wheels mounted on my car. I hear the 19" are easier than the 21". Mine are 19".

Once you get the tires on the tubes (do not forget to use corn starch all over inside the tire to let the tube slip) set up a front hub in a vice.

Lightly oil some bearings.

Mount the wheel and spin to check for the tire being out of round.
Next, find how fast it finds the heavy spot. Mark the tire to the rim.

Then break the bead and move the tire on the rim.

Re-inflate then check the balance. Repeat in a few more positions.

Takes some tries, but there is always a best spot and a real bad spot.

Ignore the dots on the tires. Depending on color they have different meanings.

I ended up putting 3 of the 4 original tubes back in as the new would not hold air. Now I understand that Brattons and Berts sell tube made to much better specifications.
