Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
From the information provided, its worth somewhere between $50 and $2000.
Seriously, IS IT RUNNING? Was it rebuilt recently? By Whom? What features? What is the compression at each cylinder? How many miles on it? Answers to those questions might provide more informed answers. |

They don't run, I bought both of them with a model A sulfer machine. The Replacement was stuck when I got it, the other was spinning free until this year when it got rain in through the water neck I think, and now there is surface rust on the piston and cylinder wall. Basically their long blocks.

Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
I have come home to find engines laying in front of the garage ---5 or 6 have appeared that way, I didn't want them bad enough to go pick them up , at Hershey this year I bought a short block---it was up the aisle from where I was staying, every time I walked by it called me, looked at it several times, std pistons, no signs of cracks, clean not rusty water jacket- 90$, --when I got it home and apart-still had original centerlock pistons, cam bores in middle of standard specs, machining marks still there ---A person that is just starting to hoard will pay more, a hoarder that is starting to think he has too many will wait till you will deliver them.

All I could find on the pistons were 40 and some letters like front or something like that.

Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
Lodi I am just down Hi-way 99 from you in Manteca. Your block is bore .40 over and front means that part of the piston points to the front of the block. I am looking for a good long block but can't go over $150.00. So PM me your phone number and may be I can come and take a look at it. If you are interested. Richard/ Manteca

I felt like a "hoarder" when my dad brought down a spare engine. "Who has a spare engine?", I thought. "Spare water pump, maybe, but a spare engine?" Sorry, had to jump in. Now, back to the sale.

Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
I have spare engines for all of my old vehicles-there's a flathead Chrysler 6 out in the pole barn, along with a flathead "Go Devil" Willys jeep engine, and three Model A engines. I like to accumulate "castings"-the parts that often aren't repopped. I'll always grab a good manifold or a transmission, especially if it is cheap. The Dodge engine was $25 at a farm auction-no one else wanted it, and they put it in the back of my truck with a front-end loader-How could I say no?

Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
One member of the club gets $500.00 for a block. He does not guarantee anything. If it is no good come back and buy another one for $500.00. I gave two engines away recently to club members and they were good engines- no cracks and the bearings were good. I wished I would have taken them apart and looked at them. Two or three members said I messed up. The two that I gave the engines to always say thanks and I hear them mention my name when showing off their running engines. I do not think I will need them and I would just let them lay around for ten more years and they would probably be hauled to the scrap yard by some family member.

Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
MY EXPERIENCE WITH USED BLOCKS
I once bought a block from an old timer Model A parts dealer for $125.00 He said the block had been sitting under a friends bench in his basement for many tears and was standard bore. I took the block to a trusted machine shop and had it hot tanked and magna-fluxed. A crack was discovered and the shop owner said he could try to "lock-stitch" the crack. He later called and said the casting was too brittle and he was unable to repair it. Total cost of the block, hot tank,magna-flux and failed lock-stitch plus labor was $400.00 down the drain. The block was later used as a boat anchor. So a word of caution. Don't let go of your cash until the block has been tested for internal and external cracks. Let's hope the "new" Model A Engine project becomes a reality soon so we can replace those failing and tired 80 + year old engines with a solid, trusted and true engine. Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
From my experience: In the search for a block, one out of three is rejected before I will consider them due to water jacket cracks. I find a useable block in about every 2.5 I tear down and that is after really looking them over for the water jacket cracks. After the initial water jacket crack check, if I were to pay $100 for a block and invest 2 hours breaking each one down, I need to get $400 for my core short blocks when I sell one as part of a rebuild. That is my current charge and I am embarrassed to need to charge that much. It is the state of engine cores in my area of the country that causes this. (Minnesota...Land of 10,000 lakes...and almost as many frost cracks.)
So what is a core block worth? Less than $100.00 untested and about $250-$400 if known to be crack free and the state or extent of disassembly. Now if the cylinders need sleeves...oh my...it is not worth much as I find customers do not want to buy an engine with sleeves. They will sleeve their own engine but don't want one as a core for a rebuild. JMO Good Day! Last edited by Dave in MN; 01-29-2016 at 05:18 PM. |

Re: How much is my 1931 Model A motor worth?
Several days ago, I was at the house of a man selling Model A parts. They had belonged to his deceased father. Among other things, there was a short block in the corner that had been sitting for years-all the openings were plugged, all the water jacket holes were taped up. No cracks that I could see with a powerful flashlight. The pistons were .010 over, and the bores still showed crosshatching. Hopefully, the bearings are good, too. I suspect this was a spare engine the old man had waiting. Other family members took his car, but left the engine. I wasn't planning on getting another engine, but this one was too good to pass up, so I paid the $300 he was asking. Now I have to find a place for it in my garage until I can get it on the stand and really give it a going-over and cleanup.
