Yes, I drove nearly all the 40 miles with my foot on the clutch and no change in crankshaft end play

The last sentence reminds me of reading some history of the home built Model A powered Pietenpol airplane of the '30's. Mr. Pietenpol (Bernard?) said that the stock thrust surface was just fine! Think about it: During take off and climb, and going into a headwind, you were at full throttle. All 40 HP were going to the propeller through that thin ring of Babbitt on the rear main!!
