68-B Cabriolet Landau iron
Can anyone verify that the original landau irons for the 1930, 68-B Cabriolet were made by the A F & S CO? I have a driver’s side that bears A F & S CO 2731 on the inside. So, I believe I should be looking for a passenger side with A F & CO 2730. Anyone out there have one that’s good for replating? See attached photos.

Re: 68-B Cabriolet Landau iron
I also need an AF & S CO 2731. The end of the one I have is broen off a couple of inches from one end. I am not certain if it can be welded back together? I would rather find another part if possible. Any suggestions? Has anyone ever taken the two halves apart at the hinge? It looks like they are pressed together somehow?

Re: 68-B Cabriolet Landau iron
The landaus need to come apart to repair any looseness that could prevent it from locking in use.
There is a hollow rivet that holds it together. You have to drill it out to take the landaus apart. You then make up a new rivet on a lathe to put it back together. To take out wear you can put the landaus on a mill and go a to a slightly larger diameter hole and make a special rivet. The ends also need to be checked for size. If they are loose they will make noise. You would have bore them larger and insert a bushing. The were originally plated together and should be replated that way. Here is another case for using dull nickel as the depressions have the unpolished dull nickel. They can be welded together. You best make up a jig to keep the holes in the right positions. The distance between the holes should be pretty close to original. The original distance will be found on Bob's Cabriolet forum just open up the date window and then do a search. Probably more info then you were looking for- just ask if you need more details I will be happy to relate what I did. |

I should add, I use the sockets to upset the rivet. I do that in my little vice - it only took 2 people to get it on the bench and has some incredible squish power. The vice is a Prentiss No. 64 and I highly recommend one. You would be amazed what you can do with that type of vice. |
