Default 1930 pop out switch?

How can you tell an original I am looking at one with a removable back plate, has 5 crimp downs in the casting to hold the plate and it says USC inside of a circle on the back cover plate, is it an original? Here is another one I dug up in the photos, original or repop? Thanks

Need a picture, but it doesn't sound original. I can post a picture of the original for the round speedometer later. If you have the oval speedometer then you should have the earlier popout without the removable rear cover.

It is hard to believe a repop can be made so close to original, how and WHY? the set up to make them must have cost a small fortune and for what in return? To sell a couple hundred???

The first 3 pictures show an original popout for the ROUND speedometer that I had to replace a shorted wire on.

The last picture shows an original popout for the OVAL speedometer. Note the key #'s location in the last 2 pictures.

I'm sure thousands of repro switches were made and sold. I see more cars using a repro switch than an original.

Is this a well documented subject, maybe there were other suppliers back then and now assumptions are made that they are repops when they could have been original??

Unfortunately this is not a pop out switch. This is a simple replacement designed to mount like original but the switch has a simple rotating on/off cylinder.

No. It is well documented. For popouts, there are only Ford originals as Tom shows, and Spanish repro popouts from the '70s.

I'm not sure where it was made, but it's the same NON popout that Marco posted above. It's one of the most common steel cable repro switches I've seen.

As I said, it's a common replacement switch from decades ago. The Spanish repro IS a pop out. In case you aren't familiar, the reason we call the original a "pop out" is when you turn the key clockwise the cylinder assembly pops outward. You can then turn the key back counterclockwise and remove the key. The switch remains on until you press the cylinder assembly back in.

I like to correct the comment made above.

My pictures show the Spanish Pop Out.

Housing and insides are the same as original one, only key cylinder is different.

Shown above by 1930 Coupe is the one made and sold by Rick's for $49.95.
and until the late eighties sold by the current Part Houses.

They look very similar on the outside except the keyhole and the keys look different. The Spanish repo key is smooth on one side and the original Ford key has groves on both sides.
This popout is for the 30-31 round speedometer.
A original and Spanish repo popout will have a long steel cable attached to it that goes to the distributor.

A correction made by Joop for the popout on the right.

Excellent post.

Let's see if I got this, 1930 coupe's photos show a non-spanish repop alongside an original, and Joops photos show a Spanish repop? So what is the best sure fire way to distinguish an original from the others?

The original will have a hole at the end of the key way, as shown in the photo about seven O" clock.
