1930 5 Window Coupe spare tire question
I just bought a 5 window coupe and the engine was built in 1929 and the title shows it to be a 1931 but from I believe most of it is a 1930. This car came with two spares, on the side and the back. On the back behind the spare is the fold down luggage rack.
This is just a drive around car with no major planned restoration so the thought of driving around with an extra spare does not distress me much. My question is in 1930, was the spare in the back or on the driver's side fender? Also, on a scale of 1 to 5, how wierd is it having this configuration of 2 spares, 5 being the wierdest. Adding pic to show both spares. Thanks |

Re: 1930 5 Window Coupe spare tire question
This two-spare configuration was quite common in the days when dirt roads were the norm, and tires had a 5,000 mile life. Fixing flat tires was a common every-day experience, so two spares saved a little down-time while on the road and added a strong sense of security. So - not weird at all #1 on your scale. Unusual, yes - and while it was / is not commonly done, it is not weird at all.
The standard configuration for a coupe (of any year) was on the rear. An option was available, either at the dealer, or on order when purchasing the car. It cost a little extra to pay for the extra wheel, tire, tube, etc. It also cost extra for the special welled fender, and for the support arm that held the wheel in place. Remembering that this car was marketed during an extreme collapse of the nation's ecomomy (the Great Depression), any extra expense in buying a new car was a very cautious affair, so not too many were done at the time. |

I've even seen them with 3 spares. One on each fender and one at the rear.

Nice looking coupe and it's yours and period correct. Do what YOU want and don't worry about others.
