Default 1930-31 Horn Not Working

The horn is mounted on the car and works fine when temporarily wired directly to the battery. The issue seems to be the connection at the bottom of the steering column in the light switch body.

Does anyone know how to verify this and how to fix the problem?

Thank you for your help.

It could well be the wire going up the switch tube.

It could be too much paint between the frame and 2 tooth bearing housing, or between the sector housing and the bearing housing. (The horn is "live" and sounds when the circuit is completed to ground through the horn button.)

You can check the horn wiring to the switch plate. Remove the bail and cover to expose the switch plate. The center contact of the switch plate is the live connection coming from the horn. Ground this to check the circuit from battery to horn to switch plate.

THEN, while it is apart, do a "continuity check" of the ground and horn button by bridging the light switch center shaft contact button and some established ground on your frame, or possibly the positive ground of your battery (better the frame if you want to check only the switch and 2 tooth steering) Pushing the horn button should show current flow.

If you don't get that then its time to REALLY break into the light rod/horn switch/2 tooth housing to find the issue. IIRC, the escutcheon in the center of both 28-29 and 30-31 horn switches can be pried off exposing the contacts - this might be the next continuity check you do (working your way back to the button on the light switch bottom. Or working forward to the ground test connection/frame/battery post.)

Now you know why so many "auxiliary horn buttons" were added and dashboards drilled for said switch.

Disconnect the two wires on the horn. Attach a voltmeter between them, push horn button on steering wheel. Is there voltage showing on the meter with the button pushed? If so, that part of the circuit is fine. Does the horn click when button pushed? Had a similar issue with mine, cleaned up ground where horn attaches and adjusted horn "ahoogah". Could just be the "ahoogah" adjustment. Chap

The horn button may have a dirty contact to ground, inhibiting current flow. A horn relay will fix this problem. (It worked for me.)
