Default Rear backing plate issue

I’m in the process of finishing up a juice brake conversion on my 28 ford. I’m having a issue with the rear drums dragging.After further inspection I noticed the backing plates angled out at the top. This would explain why the drums are dragging both are angled the same am I missing something or is this how 42/48 rear backing plates fit?

Are you using the Boling Brothers/MT Auto Parts Lincoln Bendix style brake? If so, there should be an aluminum spacer between the backing plate and the axle housing. You also need to grind down the spring hanger a touch. I just did this same install on my A.

If you're not using the aforementioned setup, it looks like your backing plate is fouling on the spring hanger, which is why the top is pushed outwards.

did you notch the backing plates to clear the spring perch? I think some guys choose to rotate them to clear also...

Original 40’s backing plates nothing needed to be knotched nothing is touching the rear of the backing plate. I cut the shock ball off for it to clear. Pictures posted

When I did this (an abortive attempt at juice brakes I later abandoned) the ball or its little extension wasn't the issue - rather the whole width of the spring shackle eye.

The backing plate had to have a hole cut in it exceeding the width of the shackle and including part of the "ridge" on the backside of the backing plate.

This one he appears to have "rotated" the backing plate for convenience of connection AND he is still having to cut the hole.

I gave up on this thought after realizing the limitation in Model A braking is NOT the mechanical aspect, but rather the limited surface area narrow tires afford. Hydraulic brakes will NOT make you stop shorter. It may save you some on adjustment - except those 40 Ford brakes are not self adjusting anyway.

But - do as you will.

Everything seems to be straight and not bent. I think when you rotate the plate you’ll slightly loose the angle. Looks like I’ll just have the drums turned down a little to not rub 1/16” should be enough.
