Brake parts

A frien of mine is rebilding the brakes on a 47 Ford F1 and would like to know where to buy quality USA parts. He'd like to replace all the cylinders in cluding the MC. Any help would be appreciated.

Check with Kanter. They had listed US made brake cylinders.

It's getting hard to source US-made parts, but they are out there. He'll need to specifically ask country of manufacture.

Certainly have it. You'll have to dig for old stock for US made. Most new brake parts from the major manufactures are made in Mexico or China. Ron mentioned his friend wanted US made parts.

I've had good luck on Ebay. I recently picked up a NOS Wagner US-made master cylinder for $30 shipped to me.

Forgot about James @ Gotham Parts in NY. He was previously with Joblot, so he knows his stuff.

Gotta be careful with NAPA too. I needed some brake cylinders for my '51 and ordered them from the local NAPA. One of the four cylinders was marked "Made in USA". The other three came from various foreign sources; one I remember is Spain. I knew they guys at NAPA pretty well so I went back and talked to them. They were cooperative, and over the next couple of weeks, we ordered a total of 17 wheel cylinders until we got a set of four made in the USA. A lot from Mexico and some China ones.

And this was at least 10 years ago. Who knows what you'll get now.

When I had to replace the off shore M/C that the PO installed in my '39 p/u I bought a USA made Wagner from Joe's Antique Auto. Don't know about wheel cylinders.

I purchased a lot of F1 brake parts from Rock Auto, they were all old stock USA parts. Bendix, Raybestos, etc. and very low prices. The brake drums listed are NOT the original style and are wider than the brake shoes!!

Ron, you list 47 F1, doesn't the F1 start in 48? Is it a 47 or an F1? The F1 and up are Bendix brakes, I believe a 47 would be Lockheed brakes.

That's agood question, it has an 8ba engine in it and it looks original. However, with a truck that old , who knows. It has open drive shaft as well wit 3 on the tree.?????

There is a place here in the NW that sleeves your original parts, Master cyl and wheel cylinders with stainless. Pretty fast turn around. Hagen's in Puyallup WA. There used to be a place on the East coast I think was called White Post that also performed this service, don't know if they are still around.

'48 PICK-UPS (not cars) had 7RT engines. ALL Ford PICK-UPS from '42 onward had OPEN drive shaft. Also seems like ALL pick-ups through 1950 still had the floor shift. I've gotta concur with JSeery that '48 pick-up brakes should have been Lockheeds. DD

Yes, F-1 starts in 48, the engine is 8RT, Holley 94 marked 7RT. Mine is a 49 and is still floor shift. I think I remember reading the really early 48's still had 59A engines. I bought all my brake parts from O'Rielly's, don't know where there were made but looked good and fit no problem. Time will tell.

Well I migh be wrong then, I thought he said F1 I never saw the paperwork and couldn't read it if I did,. But I know it has an 8BA style engine in it , open drive, not sure of the shifter, Is this important>>???

Hey J.....Remember that the "new, late-design" 8BA-type engine was released in the pick-ups one year earlier ('48) than in the passenger cars in '49. DD

Have him measure the brakes. The F1 had 11 inch (Bendix) brakes where as the 47 had 12 inch (Lockheed) brakes with different cylinders.

Don't know about the brakes But the 59 AB & tranny I have was out of a 47 truck.

On the brakes it was a switch over from the Lockheed brakes (through 47) and Bendix brakes (48 and later). So it will make a major difference in the brake parts needed. Lots of ways to ID the difference between the two.

I ordered break shoes for my Merc at Napa. Super cheap. But when they arrived front and rear in identical boxes one said made in mexico the other made in the USA. Opened them up and you could differently tell the difference. I took them back explained to the counter guy and he returned my money no problem.

On a side note years ago I heard the 53 ford truck master cylinders are the same as a Merc. So ordered one from Napa. Sure enough they are the same and made in the usa. Ive been happy with that

So, FOR SURE, 1948 1/2-ton pick-ups had the 11" Bendix brakes? Man, I hate when that happens! DD

Ron, the Bendix brakes look and operate the same as Ford pickup brakes up into at least the 80s. They look like what you are accustom to seeing on 9 inch and 8 inch Ford rear axles, just different diameters.
