Default Hershey 2021

Called AACA in Hershey with a question this week. After I got my answer, I asked if the Hershey Fall meet was a go this year. The staff’s answer was a definite yes, and the land owner, The Hershey Park Corporation has numerous other event s scheduled for this year. There is one more meeting to finalize the decision, but it is only a formality. See you there.

I gotta say I'll be happy to hear the Italian and Spanish and Russian and French that I can eavesdrop on as I wear out my hips with five seasons of clothes at easy reach! And a tasty apple!

One of my favorite things to do is to get up before dawn Saturday and put myself at the entrance to the show field. Listen and smell the entrants as they file in.

The car corral is so fun!

Another fave is to be there as soon as the vendors set up. Gravy time.

60th here. Through most of the 1960's, go through the flea market on Saturday morning, then look at the cars in the afternoon. Almost all cars were pre-1931.

Jon,

The oldest on the stadium field and the youngsters on the long gone adjacent practice field. Then there was the seemingly perpetual mud in the blue (?) field down by the long gone nursery.

This will be number 38. More than half my life. Yes the rains, the mud, the gravel trucks and the tractors. What memories. I started thanks to a wonderful man named Nacewicz at spaces along the last row of the old red field (what David refers to--the nursery). Then there was the white and then the chocolate fields. The wet shoes walking through the damp grass has been replaced by the hard asphalt, and better drainage.
And it is still free to enter and walk around (parking, spaces, motels, food, purchases and toilets excluded).
And...........those announcements: "Attention on the swap meet fields............"

See ya there!

Bruce,

Speaking of the announcements, there's that the unique eastern Pennsylvania pronunciation of "vehicles".

Right you are David. We can't wait until the PA announcer needs a car moved and call's it a "vee-hick-el. I don't know who he is, but it sounds like the same guy, year after year.

Same guy, judging from the voice, as far back as I can remember. And it isn't a recording as he cites the license plate number of the offending "vee-hick-el" each time.

If you were to talk to the gang in gasoline alley, they will tell you that often, they are pretty well sold out by the end of setup day, and ready to pack up a leave on Wed. Set up day is far from "not much going on".

Got my credentials envelope today. I've been going since the early '60s as a kid, remember cars in the stadium, and fleas between the stadium and Park Ave clearly. One of the old black pipe entrance gates to the flea market field on Park Ave is still there and in use by Hershey park crews. It has always been nearly impossible to get photos of the show cars, I think it used to be worse then than it is now.

Russcc, Gasoline Alley is no more. The Hershey company ( Herco) took most of that area for expansion. Some of the former Gasoline Alley vendors are scattered throughout the entire flea market.

Folks,
Have lived in PA all my life , had a classic car when I should have been doing other things in life., But never went to Hershey. Probably too late to start now. Except for now the new toy may need some things??
Hope you guys have fun?
(Sounds like he may be pronouncing vehicle correctly to me!)

One of the gasoline alley crew told me in 2019 that the space they normally used behind the stadium was taken temporarily for construction storage for a project. He said they would be back in the alley next year, 2020. Little did we know then. The project did not look to me at the time, that it would impinge on gasoline alley. We will see.

I know a couple guys who had spaces in Gasoline alley, were right near the root beer stand at the end of the stadium. They moved to the Green field and like it better there, are not going back. A couple others with spaces elsewhere in that field like their new spots better also.

I drove up and took a look at the construction last summer. I couldn't get close due to construction fencing, but much of that lot seemed to be just gone, as in excavated away. Construction was nowhere complete so it could be replaced,

I'm looking forward to seeing how it is this year.

Hershey Experience:
Years ago at Hershey checking out different vendors, I came across a vender who mostly had older Ford parts. I noticed a nice hub cap for a 1930 Chevrolet. I
asked the gentlemen how much for the hub cap? The guy replied “I’m selling a complete set of 5 not the single one on display.I asked the gentlemen to see the other 4 caps. He said He had the other 4 in His motor home And brought them out to show me, they were all in great shape so I purchased them. After getting home and cleaning out my trunk ,I noticed I had only 4 and evidently left the one on display and only took the 4 that He brought out from the motor home. The following year returned to Hershey hoping to locate the site I purchased the hub caps from. I searched and found the site and asked the gentlemen if He had sold the 5 hub caps the previous year and His replay was “I was hoping you would come buy as I saved it for you and have it in the motor home” The gentlemen gave it to me no charge and ever since every time at Hershey I stop by to see Him and we became HERSHEY FRIENDS. It made me really appreciate people like Him! I think it shows there is still honest people like Him! Have a great time st Hershey this year!

You do make a bunch of new friends at Hershey, whether it's the 2 guys next to you, Dale & Bill from the Midwest who you see every year, or the guy selling some tools. Asked him what he did for living ? Chemical engineer, he replied. He said, you know that shiny packaging stuff that looks like aluminum, it's actually Mylar, and I developed it.

Speaking of announcements
All day Saturday: No vehicle traffic in the flea market area.
I can remember the aisles packed with people who could only get in one day.

One persistent rumor has been that it was moving to Philadelphia or Allentown.
I guess we'll see.

I was thinking the same thing. One would assume this has to be a large portion of that area's economy. I can't see how it would benefit anyone if it was moved or cancelled.

Plus, this is down time for the park and I can't see them losing any major revenue during Oct. by allowing the AACA to use their parking lot.

Why would HER-CO. not want the AACA there? Tourist season is waining by October, so it brings an influx of people into HERSHEY World, with money to spend. Another big money maker for them is $15 a pop for parking, each day. HERSHEY is the perfect venue for everybody.

Looks like Hershey Park has been sold my sources tell me. Everything is status quo for this year but for next year the new owners want the swap meet to run Monday-Friday leaving the park available for visitors over the weekend. Again, nothing is cast in stone but this is what I have heard …..

It won't be the last one, 2022 will start on Monday and end on Friday. No weekend show. Hershey wants to keep the park opened longer on weekends in the Fall so we need to be out of there on Friday.

The weather has been nicer and nicer for that week the past few years, I can see why they want the park open.
IF true, that might actually be better for the flea market, if most would stay until Friday.

Hi John:

When you mentioned you've received your credential envelope, did you get your stickers, etc. already?

Thanks,

Tim

If you have arrived the weekend before like I have, you do get to see the red, and chocolate fields filled with vehicles from people attending Hershey Park amusement rides.
So, there maybe some value in the amusement park being open on the weekends early in October.

I went through Hershey Sunday just to have a look and to eat at the Parkside. The old Red field is back to being a parking lot, recontoured a bit but intact and repaved. The smokestacks are gone.

I can't believe they tore down the smokestacks!!! When my boy's were little that was one of the things that they looked for when we got close. Always started a fight about who saw them first!

Scale models of the original stacks. That building is the chocolate world gift shop/entertainment center. It IS nice that they put them up there.

How are the vendors going to get setup in time? It takes several days for everyone to arrive & unload in advance for opening day?

If you were to talk to the gang in gasoline alley, they will tell you that often, they are pretty well sold out by the end of setup day, and ready to pack up a leave on Wed. Set up day is far from "not much going on".

x3 I always buy on tuesday..............

Best wishes. I got a fine steering wheel for my 39 truck. Bring $$$, comfortable walking shoes and apparel, back pack/sack for your goodies and have fun. If you can bring a buddy, good company and more eyes looking.

I'm already getting prepared for Hershey. Will be hunting 40 parts. I have my program from 2019 looking where vendors are located.
