Default 12 volt Generator Cut out?

Hello guys,

Quick question: I'd like to convert my generator to 12 volts, positive ground. Do you need to replace the cut out with a 12 volt cut out, or will the existing one still work? I know adding an alternator is recommended for most conversions, however, I'd really like to keep the generator for now.

If the cut out does need to be swapped out, do you have one you recommend?

Thanks!

Don't have to do a thing, just install the 12 volt battery. Generator will charge it as is. Of course bulbs need to be replaced, resistor on horn and coil, etc.

Just remember when you convert to 12 volts, repolarize the generator if you are using the original 6 volt generator and changing the battery and the polarity of the system.

Oh good thought. Do you need to change the polarity? Could I leave it positive ground and 12 volt, or is that not recommended?

A lot depends on "WHAT" cutout you have. There must be a reason there are 6, 8 and 12 volt cutouts also 6 and 12 volt field winding's. ?
Often times when switching to 12 volts, the + and - are switched to be more compatible with modern amenities.
Yes people do convert Model T gens to 12 volts by changing the cutout without changing the field winding's so A's might be the same.

I have a 12 volt, negative ground system using an original generator. No generator changes are required if your electrical loads are reasonable. My cutout is a diode type that I made myself using a Delco diode (found on eBay).
