2021 plans for your Model A

Along with getting the much needed vaccine for COVID19, I am planning on the following for "Molly" ( my 1930 TUDOR) and I:
1. Get the car "sorted" - meaning that every time I hit the started button and pull the choke (when cold) the car will start.
2. Eliminate condenser issues by going to modern style upper and lower plate with modern points and condenser.
3. Attend the MAFCA NH tour in June - Wife and I already have reservations at the host Hotel in North Conway NH.
4. Assuming my club meets either virtual or in person (maybe this year), become more active and plan at least 1 tour for the club.
5. Drive Molly 3 weeks straight prior to June and work any unforeseen bugs out of it.
6. Just enjoy driving my A
7. Got to the Hershey swap meet. I have not been for over 40 years.
8. Install some that resembles seat belts/restraint system. My wife is always afraid the door will open (PS. it has never opened while driving but a precaution nonetheless)
What are your plans this year??

1. Pull the engine, fix the crank end-play issue, adjust rods and mains as needed.

2. Replace one king pin
3. Try to get matching paint for touch-ups.
4. Start enjoying driving rather than just working on car.

I’m with Holdover, need to drive my 5 more often too, maybe bring up some new issues that need attention. 28 Tudor, 29 Tudor, 28 Phaeton, 29 Roadster P.U., 30 Coupe. But big changes for the 29 Tudor hopefully destined for the 2021 MAFCA NH tour:

I hope to figure out why the rear main leaks so much, I set the clearance at .0015",end play is about .020", There is a gasket between the block and the flywheel housing.
It never leaked much until I had to replace the internally cracked cylinder head that had been previously repaired.

Hello Ray in La Mesa, good luck with your project. Of all the body styles, the Cabriolet is the most difficult. I spent last June to October mounting the cowl, radiator, hood, doors and finished in October with the quarters, rumble lid frame and the wooden belt rail (had help from a local finished carpenter). All of these parts were mounted and removed at least six times and some (the quarters) close to ten times. It is all about door gaps, making them even and 1/8 - 5/32 in. and placing/removing shims under the subframe. The best to you, Ed

WWirz, you may want to read up on changing to modern points and condenser.. I found no benefit and the points can be more difficult to adjust. Check discussions about relocated (purchase short proof points) up near the coil location, which some owners state locating the points away from the block/ manifold heat is beneficial...

Duke36 - Don't you mean condenser, not points. It sould be rather difficult to mount the points elsewhere.

I have read about locating the condenser up next to the coil. If the modern points and condenser set up does not improve the reliability, I will try mounting the condenser next to the coil. Lord knows....I have a gross of condensers right now.. :-), that I can try.

'29 Tudor - fix the lights and horn electrical, replace the windshield wiper motor, general maintenance
'29 Fordor - adjust the emergency brakes, repaint the wheels, replace the exhaust manifold gasket, change the throwout bearing, fix the window frame on the passenger door.

It looks like the latter half of this year will allow me to get my dad's roadster on the road. I have had it in my shop for several years but my work has kept me many miles away.

We are moving to NC the end of February where my shop is and after remodeling the house for my wife I will tackle finishing my shop and then get busy on the roadster. I wish Dad could be around to see it run again!

Since we unwisely sold the car in 2013, I have a few issues to resolve now that we have gotten it back.
1- get to the bottom of a highway overheating issue- maybe put back the original radiator the interim owner replaced for cosmetic reasons.
2- put the wolf whistle and cup holder back on.
3- figure out how to get the "peep" mirrors into a useable position.
4- determine if there is a way to make the paint less shiny.
5- drive it as much as possible......

take a rag of kerosene and rub the body down. it will dull it.

In 2011 we bought a 5 acre Christmas tree farm in NC. I designed the house, my third and my wife and I built it. We moved in 2015 along with my 85 year old father-in-law. We had lots to still do plus we were sort of tied to home. He is no longer with us and I continued to work outside reshaping the land, digging a pond and removing over 200 large pine trees. This last summer was to be the summer of exploring then Covids. Now we see a chance to explore with our new A and even if we can't get out of the car we can have the top down and enjoy the ride. We have Mt Airy, (Mayberry) Blue Grass center just north on the parkway and dozens of local roads we have never seen. I'm counting the days 73 to go.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUKOOWnQw9I

the paint was too shiny to suit me originally, then the interim owner had it repainted.
my fault for letting it go.
