Re: Good Lookin Flatty
I would like to know more about the fan adapter to the alternator. Like where is it available, or did you make it?

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
How does the alternator go bearing wise with the fan,the generators with the fan on had two tapered rollers to take the fan thrust.
As for a nice engine ,maybe Gavin the hotrodder can post a pic of his. Lawrie |

they should not make those things! I went on a maiden voyage in my friends 35 pick up with a fresh motor. their was a bad vibration about 45 to 50 mph. we though something was very wrong. drove back to his shop and I dropped the fan belt and the vibration went away. took off the fan and put the fan belt back on and everything is good. he is going to take off the alternator and put a generator back on

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
Ken I am going to use 12V generator field coils and a NOS 12V regulator. I have a 39, I think, generator and fan.
I have read that you can use a 6V generator for 12V without changing the fields. John |

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
Pete, what is the story on the harmonic balancer? I knew they were available for 8BAs but that is the first one I've seen on a 59A.
Regarding the alternator, when you get the engine in the '36, the radiator hoses should go up each side of it. That provides a bit of camouflage for it. Your pics have it out in the open and that maybe a contributing factor as to why the nay sayers are on your case. |

You have to use a small diameter light weight aluminum or plastic fan, preferably 6 blades, and it will work fine. I've run mine over 4 years with no vibration or problems. I know the purists may not agree with this approach, but it's more appealing than an electric fan in my opinion. |

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
That's the type of fan required to cool these engines. That impresses me more than the rest of the non necessary parts. G.M.

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
Hi Fellas,
Thanks very much for your comments and concerns.I will pass them on. 36tbird -Pete, what is the story on the harmonic balancer? I knew they were available for 8BAs but that is the first one I've seen on a 59A. I believe he has done a little machining and mounted it backwards. I will let you know. This is Tim,s first Flatty build Here is a picture of it sitting in the Chassis. It has a Toyota Supra 5 Speed adapted. Open drive , 36 Banjo. 40 Juice brakes,VH 44 brake booster. Buick Drums. Headers are from Flat Attack here in OZ. Pete from OZ |

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
You can but they need a smaller pulley which don't work with a alt. mounted fan at idle. Put in 24 volt stator and you can use a stock Ford pulley and it will charge at a slow idle. The stator is less than $25.00 Sorry but didn't see you started talking generator but I will leave it posted as general information anyway. G.M.

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
I was told once that there is an outfit that makes an alternator inside the old style generator case.
Perhaps if that is true, it might be a consideration for keeping those with the purist eyes from catching on and still get the amps needed. Just my thought... Still a good looking engine... |

Re: Good Lookin Flatty
Ken, I honestly don't remember his name, he is in WA, he sells on Ebay, does great work! I think I have his business card, I'll let you know. Or you could just check local auto electric shops, ask if they can & will work on generators, That is a crap shoot!
