Default F100 steering box for 30` Model A

I want to put a F100 steering box in my 30` roadster. Which year F100`s would be the best for this installation? Any particular ID#`s or any other stampings to identify I have found the correct box? Are parts available to rebuild them? Any alterations to the frame or body?
Thank you

Randy Gross is quite knowledgeable in this area (he sells them). He can probably tell you exactly what you need to do. I believe he is using his father Mel's account, so look for Mel Gross.

This is information I've collected off the Barn.
TAAA-3524-A .. Steering Shaft w/Worm-42 3/4" long / 1953/55 F100/250.

B6C-3524-A .. Steering Shaft w/Worm-41" long / 1956 F100/250.
---------------------------------------------------------------
7RC-3575 .. Sector Shaft / 1948/52 F1/F2/F3.

B6C-3575-A .. Sector Shaft / 1953/56 F100/250.
You have a 53-56 box. Below where the steering shaft comes out of the box you should find "GEMMER" cast into the box. The number on the other side of the box are probably casting numbers and are I believe are found on all the 53-56 boxes. Just measure your spare box steering shaft. As stated in previous response, the 53-55 is slightly longer and if you have a stock truck you should not attempt to use a 56 steering shaft. I will also bet the spare needs about as many replacement parts as the one in your truck. Have you tried adjusting the sector shaft to take up some of the play? Have you ever checked oil level in the box? If you rebuild the box yourself make certain you set the sector shaft properly. It will make or break your rebuild.
1953/55 is not the same as 1956. Not only is the steering shaft different, but so is the housing.
The 3CC03 gear box is for 1953-56 f100-f250 the tube's length is 36 inches the
base that mounts to the chassis is 6 1/4 inches long
The 3CC01 gear box is for 1957-1960 f100-f250 the tubes's lenght is 33 3/8 inches long the base that mounts to the chassis is 6 7/8 inches
worm B7C-3524-X #88
TAAA-3504-B .. 1953/55 F100/250 Steering Gearbox.
B6C-3504-A .. 1956 F100/250 Steering Gearbox.
F1 boxes have the column shaft come in under the steering box, F100's have the column shaft come in over the steering box. two boxes are almost identical in physical size it's just the steering shaft placement that differs , often with an F1 box you wil need a universal to get the column at a suitable angle. I think the F1 box may use a car type pitman arm as opposed to F100 clamp style with the through bolt. F1 48-53 F100 53-56The Tradel book says this; cut the flange off an empty A steering box as close as you can get to the outside and still have some of the gussets. Cut the flange off an empty F100 gear box, about one inch from the gearbox. Grind a bevel on both parts. Sub assemble the gear box and install in the car with the body on to clock the two castings. Tack weld in two places. This is not cast iron, its cast steel, and it welds really nice with a home MIG. Put the gearbox on the bench, and really lay some heat in for about an inch, then imediatly do the oposite side. Walk away for an hour. When you come back, if the shaft turns easily, weld two more places. When mine was done and assembled, I filled it with straight STP and it never leaked, even with no seal on the shaft. The reason you want to shorten the gearbox is for clearance to install the V8. The shaft just sticks out an inch further

The 57-60 box is the same as the 53-56 box, except it has a slightly larger mounting flange. The pitman arm is the same pinch bolt style as the 53-56. The 53-56 has a ball end on the pitman arm, the 57-60 uses a tapered end, like a tie rod. I used a 59 box in my modified and it worked fine. The main difference seems to be the larger face on the later box. I also have both and I plan to cut down the later box. There seems to be plenty of meat and I can go with holes closer together for a smaller face. Also I will grind the face so the column faces in the right direction. I am using a tardel taper spacer and it takes up too much space. I have a new seal which may require fitting, I have taken the later one apart and looked for differences. Not much different. The flange is bigger on the later box and the sector shaft is shorter by 1/8". Ratio and bearings the same.
If you wanted to remove the flange and put on a new one, I don't see any advantage to the earlier box. The casting is alittle longer around the lower shaft bearing but only by maybe 1/4".

I would like an upgraded F100 in my 30 coupe. How would I get in contact with modelaonly.net or Randy Gross?

Dick,if this is for your AV8, clearance can be a problem at the header.
F100 box steering shaft is at the top like an A box.
F1 box steering shaft is at the bottom ,often giving more clearance.

I bought my 56 f100 column at a salvage yard for $150. I used the pitman arm and drag link. Went to NPD and bought a seal, gasket and 2 brass bushings $15.00. Put it in my 29 AA, much easier to steer.
