I thought I would share pics of the Euro V8 aluminum oil pan.Many have heard and maybe never seen one.Here is one example.I think it is super cool.Just want to point out that in pic #1 notice the clearance at the starter location.When dropping a 32-34 the unsplit wishbone has a tendency to almost hit the steel pan.


Took a drive yesterday and found some of these V8 60 aluminum pans.I added the pics of the V8 60 pan.

No,the otter pin is plain steel.Interesting is that the threaded holes for the starter bolts are 5/16 NC and drain plug is 1 1/2 fine thread. The dip stick tube goes in the pop out boss towards the rear instead of standard location like the USA.No vent hole at the front but cast as it should be vented.

They are very cool oil pans. Wondering if they were also available and used in production in the UK?

Those two are quite different from one another starting with the drain plug and location for the dipstick.

Considering that the aluminum pans are cast, was just wondering what the weight difference is compared to a sheet metal steel pan.

Approx 2.5 kg less than a steel pan.

Interesting, but I suspect that Ford made them for a limited time for some applications until they realized that the cast aluminum would not survive the passage of time or all the dents and bends that the steel pans suffered and still remained usable.

When the first V8s were being developed, the Aluminum pan was used, (aside from the fact they were more expensive to produce)because it was more quickly available. Time was of the essence during the engine development and steel pans would take too long.
Longevity, Auminum vs. Steel, was a minor concern if at all.

Boy - I'd love to have one of these pans . . . anybody have one? I'd just love to put one on an engine that I'm about to build - would match the aluminum heads and manifold.

Here’s an aluminium sump off a four bearing crank engine fitted to the English
model 60. Part no 54-6675. Note the crankcase breather and position of the dipstick. Of course this sump is also shorter.

Those pans look a way lot better than the ones on the French SUMB military truck engines. Those damn things are big monsters by comparison.

Thanks to Robert's keen eye, if you look closely at the front undercarriage photo of the red '33 Rheinland cabriolet for sale presently on ebay, it has what appears to be an aluminum oil pan on what otherwise is a typical '33-'34 four cylinder engine (manufactured in Germany with many unique-to-Germany casting marks and other features).
