Default Pulled the Steering Box Today

My '29 Special Coupe 7-tooth steering box needed a rebuild badly, so today I tackled the task of removing the box and column from the car. This was my first try ever and I felt apprehensive about tackling the job alone. I followed Les Andrews' book - plus some shortcuts and took the assembly (with steering wheel attached) out from the driver's side. I was surprised how EASY it was..in under 2 hours!

Now the fun begins! But it is well worth the effort to rebuild it and get some good steering.

Resist the temptation to use a "knocker" to remove the steering wheel. Those darned things have ruined more steering shafts than Father Time or Mother Nature ever have. Buy, beg or borrow a dedicated Model A steering wheel puller. You wouldn't believe how stuck some of these wheels are, even with a puller. I've bowed my two-piece puller on several steering wheels until they finally popped (and I mean POPPED!) loose.
Be sure to put a good sized bolt down the top of the steering shaft before tightening the puller. Otherwise, you run the risk of mushrooming or even breaking the top of the shaft.

Try to find a 29 two tooth steering box as they ar a better box and completely adjustable . The 29 two tooth has the same style top as the seven tooth so looks the same in the car . The 30/31 fits as well but has a different style where the levers exit at the top . Just depends if you want it to look original . Get a Gemmer in preference to a Ford if you can as it is easier to get parts if you need them .A 29 two tooth will cost double than a 30/31 two tooth due to rarity .

John in same weather Suffolk County England .

PS You would need to get a keyed 29 steering wheel as well.
