1930s garage fixtures

somewhere i read a book about Ford maintenance. in the initial chapters, reference was made, complete with nicely done line drawings, of fixtures which could be built to make the work easier.

obviously this was before consumer-culture and such things were not available down at the corner store. ramps, workbenches, and engine cradles, were among the pieces i remember.

anyone know which book, or of any book, illustrating these items in their period correct (pre-war) guise?

actually, any book showing how to set up a pre-war garage would be helpful.

Yeah, $25K now is just the CPI equivalent of $1250 then. I doubt $25K would even come close to equipping a shop comparable to the KRW one pictured.

Look for a copy of the Dyke's Automotive Encyclopedia. They have a small section on home & commercial shop layouts. look for a later issue, mine is a third edition 1914 so it's pre WW1. If you have never had the opportunity to look through a Dyke's find someone that has one, they are fascinating. I was working on a 1900 auto and found the ignition info I needed to get it running. Having been a mechanic for 47 years I have seen tool boxes that cost 30k just the box no tools! When you look at scan tools that cost 5k a set of end wrenches' that are $1200? I'm glad I bought all the basic tools 40 years ago.

Paul Shinn made a comment regarding correct tools as he drained the oil using an adjustable wrench. something to the effect "these are the tools my father used to work on Model As". drove home a point.

i finally bought a reasonably priced hard copy of this book. it was around 25$ but i got it for 5 with amazon reward points.

in all honest, 5$ is about all it's worth. as a reprint, the type is too small to easily read. i will use it as a general reference and then go online to read & print readable size anything i can actually use.

What they were worth or what he paid for them?

A new Snap On triple bank box with hutch and riser with a side cabinet is 30k now without tools
The used box I bought for 2500$ 30 years ago recently had a 4000$ offer , most all the snap on tools I bought are worth more than I paid for them 20-40 years ago

maybe that's what he was referring. i find when people bring money into a conversation, especially as a point to impress, i shut down and look for something else to discuss.

and while not specifically directed towards you, but the comments in general of "worth", i ask 'how much will your survivors let them go at the estate sale?'

i'm at the point in life where value is time. you can always go out and make more money.

but try to make an extra day when you're healthy enough to enjoy it.
