Default Stromberg for V8-60....MORE From "Fred A"

.

More info on the original carburetors used on V8-60 engines, with pics, compliments of "Fred A".

Ford numbered these carburetors 52-9510-B. These probably came out of overseas use. The 52, prefix which comes out of 1935 was used to specify the small V8 in the US until a later and more specific parts and models were approved. Somehow we got a 22 in the mix that went like 922 for the 60hp engines and car parts for 1939, and the Final 022 for the final year,1940. Most of us call these carburetors the Stromberg 81 as they are boldly marked on the right side. Some of the perhaps earlier were labeled 52/81. Strombergs of the era were also labeled as to the size with a fractional size by a number on the left side beneath the choke linkage, as was the practice of Stromberg for carburetors for Ford, GM, and others. For the smaller 60, the number is 13/16, undoubtedly inch. I like to use the Stromberg 81s where they may solve the problems of the later vacuum "power valve" or enrichment. These work as they hit the ground in the junk yard. My 81 collection is getting pretty thin. Among the Strombergs is a 1940 setup with the eventual Holley/Ford manifold/carb for that last year of production. Always appreciate any comments from the pundits, For V8COOPMAN, as net publisher Thanks: Fred A

Another thing to note is that the bases have smaller diameter throttle plates - they are specific to the Stromberg 81.

Both the Holley/Ford 92s and the Stromberg 81's bases are labeled. The Holley/Ford 92 labeled AA-7/8 and the Stromberg 81 labeled EE-7/8. This is handy when buying the swapmeet carburetors made from mismatched parts. Just often enough some sharpie will pass-off an 81body with an EE-1 base off of Strombergs: model 40, 48, or 97. Not good. Not a problem with a 92. The current repop 81 may still be made with the 97 logo on their 81s. Good Luck: Fred A

You may notice that the hobby is not embracing the Little 60 to retrofit their old Ford. Years ago, I had a T coupe with a 60. It was a great learning experience and have reported on it, out here, a few times. The most recent bad idea has been to convert my '40 coupe to accept my semi correct 022A engine. The engine/trans is not the problem. The radiator and sheet metal are. Also, the Deluxe Coupe with a sixty was a rare bird from the factory. The remaining unmolested cars have become something special. This trend, or lack of one leaves the 60 to esoterica. Good Luck: Fred A

Fred,

under your post # 1, you reported that a Stromberg was marked 15/16. Likely just a typo, the actual marking being 13/16. These numbers represent fractions of an inch as you said, the 15/16 corresponding to .94", and 13/16 to .81".

Here are the French 81's(22.2 embossed on the side) and the USA parts interchange. They were used on the Ford 1950 Vedette V8 60 .They all have a vacuum port on the base. Some were embossed Zenith/Stromberg and some not(maybe service part)

Thanks Alan for noticing the mistake. As I pointed out in #1, the 15/16 size was used in various forms by several cars, other than Fords. Because Coopman has been kind enough to relay my picture posts, I could not correct my own text. Pleased that you were paying attention. Thanks: Fred A
