Default `35 Truck 3 brush generator oddity

I have a `35 1-1/2 ton truck, new to me, starting to get things working.
The generator is not charging, so I pulled it for a look.
The generator has a broken field coil wire, so I don't suspect the cutout, but I have been looking a great deal for the cutout that is mounted on this generator, I have never seen anything like it. The contacts look good, all wires are good, so I think it will work just fine, I just want to know why it's so different than the car or pickup type.. anybody??
Do you suppose the Tonners use some sort of heavy duty generator?
Long as I'm writing -- I plan to repair the broken wire, and I don't know how well it will hold up, so I could use a field coil.

I have some like that(same shape) in a pile of parts I bought, the ones I have are a local Australian manufacture, they look good inside also.
let me know if you want the brand.

Hi there, Your oblong shape cut out was a standard type on many American cars and trucks of the twenties and thirties. Delco Remy and many other electrical companies made them but it was not a Ford original part. All ford cut outs were round in shape from the model T to 1939. Yours is just an aftermarket replacement. That broken field brush wire needs to be a very flexible cable so that it moves with the brush. Ordinary automotive cable or a single strand field winding wire will not do the job. Regards, Kevin.

Thanks, guys, I appreciate your comments.
Kevin, the field wire that is broken is right near the brush connection, so I think I have enough wire to open the crimped portion, and re-crimp the wire.
It appears to me that the thick copper multi-strand wire cracked enough to burn through, so I better check the current right away.
Thanks again, gentlemen.

Well, I got the generator apart, and fixed the wire, it turned out to be the lead from the cutout to a brush. I fixed it, cleaned things, and put it back together.
I still had no charge, so I decided to try to adjust the third brush, and abruptly broke the brush holder. The adjustment ring is stuck, so I'll have to take it off again to see what else need fixing.
I'll post a thread for parts.. anybody?

After you had the generator apart & put it back together did you polarize the system?
