LED's and light bulbs are two different things. They share very little in common except turning electricity into light.

Make sure the bulbs are a large enough draw to operate the flasher. I lost what was left of my hair trying to get the lights to flash

Ken you are right.I will have to say in the day time those chevron lights on a 40 are useless for brake lights.

You could use any of those original flasher switches but need to test and power up the switch on your work bench to sort out which wire is witch. 6 or 12 volt will work but may have to replace the pilot bulb to suit. Of course the flasher unit would have to be the correct voltage also. Easy to do really. Using the rear stop lights as blinkers is very dangerous in my opinion because they are hard to see, and also when one blinker is flashing you only have one stop light working. Separate amber blinker lights is the only way to be seen. Isnt it better to be seen than some old codger running up the backside of your treasure. I use Harley Davidson chrome amber flasher lamps mounted down on the bumper front and rear on my 34 Ford. Also dont wire the power wire to the flasher can through the ignition switch so that the ignition does not have to be on to work the flashers if you brake down on the side of the road. Regards, Kevin.

Found it at the bottom of the drawer, kinda rough but...
A lot of other cool stuff too. The colors may pertain to other units as well
I just made a new harness and will need it so good timing

I used this system http://turnswitch.com/Turnsignal.htm in my 40 with LEd lights. Works great. I chose the under dash toggle but I often think that the column switch would be much more convenient. You have to pay attention to and remember to cancel the blinker quickly after making a turn or you may have someone turning in front of you.Setting the cancel time is adjustable. If you turn a signal on while your brake is on the blinker will not time out while waiting at the intersection or stop light while you wait and the timer starts up again when you let off the brake.

I have installed turn signals in quite a few old Fords.
My method had 2 required parameters.
1- It had to be self canceling.
2- It had to look like it came from the factory.

I used a 53 to 56 F100 column tube with turn signal switch intact.
I used 32/50 bulbs in the tail lights. NO problem seeing them if you were qualified to drive.
I used the parking or cowl lights for the front turns.
Some cars required minor machine work on the steering shaft to adapt the cancellng cam.
