What is the purpose of the two holes, in the 53' Mercury Teapot linkage?

There may have been linkage differences between manual and automatic type transmission applications but this is only speculation. The carbs have subtle differences between applications but I don't know all the possibilities. I'm more familiar with the 1951s. Those early automatics had to have the TV control assembly to control the transmission pressure.

Just at a quick look mine does not have those two holes. Just one . There are two further back in the linkage as can be seen in this picture.

I was looking for something else and, pure dumb luck, I found it, and bought it! This will clean up nice. It turned out to be a Snap-On tool.

The add read:

"Snap On 51-53 Mercomatic Mercury Throttle Linkage Gauge - AT-65 - USA"

Came in today, a little polishing and she is good as new. Now to set the linkage correctly.
