New Tires
Had my first flat and need to replace all 4 tires. Looking for opinions. I drive the car daily from May to November. So what do I buy and who do I buy them from? Thanks!

Re: New Tires
Radials are more expensive, but handle better, and some brands use similar tread to the conventional bias-ply tires. Main difference is the sidewalls are less stiff. For a daily driver, radials might be worth it. Don't forget to replace your spare as well.

Re: New Tires
I saw a Speedster today at the Sharon, Wisc. meet that had raised white letter 'Firestone' radials, Excelsior brand tire.
Man they looked good! |

I did the Lucas blackwalls as I am a "newbie" Model A owner, and with so much else to spend on straightening the car out, seemed a reasonable choice as well as liked the style and pattern. Although not as defined or stylish as the more expensive alternatives, it is a respectable pattern and lettering. I considered the Euro brand and Blockley, but so far I'm satisfied with the Lucas blackwall and have driven about 400 miles in a few months of ownership. I was in the doghouse for about a week for replacing the older, cracked, and hazardous white walls when I purchsed the car for blackwalls, but when all cleaned up, it has grown on her. |

Re: New Tires
You can buy white tire paint to paint whitewalls on blackwall tires. Also available is a paint pen to paint the lettering on tires. Amazon sells both.

Re: New Tires
I have changed over to Coker WW radials on both of my cars, and I would never go back to biased tires.
Radials provide a softer ride, and they tend not to want to follow a track, like a crack in the road, and want to follow it as biased tires do. |

Re: New Tires
I have the Coker white walls radials and I don’t have many miles before and after but I love the look of them on the car. I’ll get more miles on them soon, after my brake rebuild is done.

Re: New Tires
Goodyear are the best bias ply tire available, but you will pay about $300 extra for 4.
Lucas and Universal both get good reviews. I've never liked how Firestone tires drive on our cars. confirm the DOT code to find exact age of your "new" tires. blackwalls look better on ALL Model As. "that's all I've got to say about that"

I may have an opportunity to get a good deal on some Goodyear whitewalls but will need to "correct " them if I do.......

Re: New Tires
I guess on the radial vs. bias ply debate, I'm on the fence.
If you are one to drive your car thousands of miles a year yeah I can 'get' radials I understand. But if you are like me and put MAYBE 200 miles a year on the 'A' I can't see them. I grew up driving bias-ply and it's no big deal really to me. You get a feel for the car and drive accordingly w/o ever really thinking about it. If a person is supposed to change tires regularly like at least every 7 years it wouldn't justify the extra $$, at least to me, for the way I use the car. Plus I'm not running a Mitchell OD I run 40MPH. Faster speeds say over 45 yeah radials would be better for you. If I need to go fast we have a Mustang parked in the shed! |

Re: New Tires
16" 35 Ford wheels get cheap readily available radials. you'll never look back and regret it. Your car will drive and ride a lot better. JMHO
