Voltage regulator
Bird Haven Vintage Auto does not know when they will have the positive ground 6 volt regulators that look like a cutout available. O'Reilly sells a positive ground 6 volt regulator, 2 terminal voltage regulator made by Standard. Has anyone used this on their model A? Does anyone see why it wouldn't work? The p/n is VR615

Re: Voltage regulator
Jim Peterson just contacted me and still sells his voltage regulator so I'm going that route instead.

Re: Voltage regulator
You do not have an external field terminal on an A generator. If you removed the 3rd brush, drilled a hole through the case and wired an insulated terminal for connection to the regulator you could use it- providing you know how to wire the rest of it to bypass the standard A cutout which would now be in the external VR615 case.

Re: Voltage regulator
Hooking up a voltage regulator to the Model A generator is not complicated. The cutout can be bypassed internally with a short wire and some solder. The wire coming from the third brush to the field windings is removed from the third brush and connected to the field terminal (F terminal) on the voltage regulator. B goes to the battery. G goes to the cutout. Only trick is getting the correct voltage regulator: For 6 volt positive ground. Early Ford regulators are the best bet.

Re: Voltage regulator
I ran one of Jim's VR for years until I got a Russ Evans look-a-like generator/alternator. Sold the VR generator to a club member and he has 6 years of trouble free charging. I highly recommend Jim's band style voltage regulator!!!!!!
