flathead 8 transmission question
I need a little guidance. I have a 8BA motor with a 9.5 clutch that I am putting in a 1953 f100. This motor did not come with the truck. The transmission is a T98-148 that did come with the truck. I discovered that the throwout bearing does not fit on the transmission. I need some guidance to what I should do next? What direction should I go?

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
Sounds like you need to find out what throwout bearing you need. Get hold of a good parts/repair manual.
https://www.google.com/search?q=1953...hrome&ie=UTF-8 A 9.5 inch clutch is too small for an f-100. I believe it should be an 11 inch. http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_tr...earing&x=0&y=0 Last edited by 19Fordy; 08-03-2017 at 09:51 AM. |

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
Trucks all came with 10" or larger clutches, cars came with 9.5" and 9". Trucks also had larger diameter input shafts (1-3/8" vs 1-1/16", as I recall). You'll need to use a Truck clutch to mate the trans.
The correct throwout bearing is C0TZ-7580-B, or SKF N1087. The industry number is BIN 2065.

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
Generally speaking a T98 trans is a 4spd which would require an eleven inch clutch and therefore a HD throw out bearing.
You might want to check the pilot bearing in the crank shaft, it might be to small for the T98 input shaft. Many years ago I purchased a 58 F100 that had a T98, the guy I bought it from was trying to put a newly rebuilt Y block V8 with a flywheel and clutch for a passenger car three speed. The truck had a T98 4spd. I replaced the flywheel/ clutch with one for a 4spd and the whole thing slipped right together..

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
So as a follow-up, is it possible to change the flywheel so that an 10 or 11 inch clutch will bolt up? What needs to be done to the motor to do this if possible?

Some one will be happy to let you have an 11" flywheel for a lot less than the cost of drilling one. My two fit 59AB, and are near 94941, SF, Ca. The shipping would be silly. Karl |

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
Have you considered going with a different transmission and using the flywheel and so on you have? Unless you plan on pulling tree stumps there is no need for an 11 inch clutch setup, IMO. If it was me I would figure out a way to use the clutch setup I had (you can get a custom clutch to fit the splines on the input shaft) or look at different transmission options.

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
First of all, do you have the correct 1953 F-100 bell housing with the motor? You really must start with this. The motor mount setup for 1953 was unique to the F-100 as well as the clutch release parts.
Assuming that you have the 53 bell housing, you could use the flywheel drilled for a 10" long style clutch, but most of the trucks with the 4 speed transmission came with the 11" clutch. If you're planning on using this pickup truck for pleasure driving, the 10" would suffice. As you've learned, the flywheel that is drilled for the 9-1/2" clutch will not work in the pickup truck. Also, all Ford trucks starting with 1953 models used a longer transmission input shaft (and corresponding deeper bell housing).

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
How do I figure out if I have the correct bell housing? I do know that all the bolt holes line up.

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
If you rear motormounts on the bellhousing fits your frame your good to go...

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
Which bellhousing has mounts to the frame on it, I haven't seen that one?

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
Can someone post a photo of the bellhousing, this is something I'm not familiar with (among thousands of other things!).

Re: flathead 8 transmission question
Yep, never seen one! Thanks flatheadmurre. Seems like a strange engineering approach to me, but obviously it worked.

Second try with a correct boltpattern.
