Question December 1929 Chassis/Frame Assembly

If you have a Nov. or Dec. 1929 original Model A chassis, can you tell me what holes are provided in the left and right frame members for the spare wheel carriers? What size are the holes and how many on each side?

In addition, do any of the Nov. or Dec. 1929 original Model A chassis have the later style sockets in each frame side member as was used in the '30-'31 ebrake cross-shaft?

I know on the 30/31 frames, there are little dings on the side of the frame showing where the side mount holes were drilled at. It's 4 holes for each side mount. I imagine a Brattons catalog etc would say what size to drill the holes. I don't know on a 29 frame. The e brake cross over bar is a completely different set up on mid 30 on cars.

If your numbers are December of 29 it is likely the car was not produced until Febuary or March of 1930. I am not certain without looking at my JS when the e-brake cross shaft change was. I will look that up later when I have time.

I think it was about March 1930 when the E brake shaft started going THROUGH the frame. My March 1930 frame has the caps over the holes, and uses the old style. I have a 1930 running gear I bought from a hot rod job. Numbers match and it looks all original.

Hi Karl,

Hopefully Tom Moniz and/or Jerry Par will see this. They both have 1930 models with November numbers. I know the new frames were planned before that time but don't know if they were in full production. As noted, these frames had small dimples as center punch marks but no holes for a side spare unless a side spare was actually installed. They also had the formed holes for the not yet produced emergency cross shaft. My original late April Fordor has holes but the early cross shaft and hole cover plates.

Marco
i went out and took a couple of photos, they explain it better than me
this is on chassis #2671426 (november 26,1929)which is on my early 1930 Briggs sport coupe 160-1820
Hey she is going to have a birthday next week 83 years old
and i remember her when she was just a 40 year old
I also wish to correct a mistake I made last week on the shape of the end of the draft deflector on the windshield
while i was out there looking ,i realized that in the early 70s,or even the late 60s i bought a perfect windshield frame and glass for $25 at the Harrahs swap meet in Reno
i swaped it with my original frame
i couldnt find the old one,i may have tossed it, as the glass had a crack in it
back then, i had no idea that there was a difference

Tom,

Are those holes on BOTH side of the frame or just one side? Which side?

Thanks Pluck

Thanks for the input. I have two questions. First, did Ford supply the four holes including the 7/8" hole in both side members until Feb 1930 when center punching was started? Second, when was the earliest date the side ebrake sockets were stamped for the newer ebrake shaft. The newer ebrake cross shafts were installed in May 1930.

Thanks Tom for the photos. My chassis looks exactly the same as both your pictures.

My 1930 matching numbers running gear (A2787582) has plates covering the frame holes for the E-brake and has dimples not holes for the side mounts.
