Cross shaft interference--rear motor mounts?

Just installed rebuilt cross shaft w/new bushings, attached pedal rod, and when the brake pedal is pushed about 2/3 of the way down it hits the underside of the torque tube. When pushed all the way down the U joint housing rises visibly. This wasn't the case when I disassembled. The only explanation I can think of is that the rear motor mounts are too low. Upon disassembly I made no effort to label left and right mounts--I presume they are both the same. Mounts went back in with new pads and bolt set. The book said I may need to pry the mounts apart due to new pads, but actually there was about 1/4" of free space between the bell casting and the face of the mounts. Suggestions?

MMM If memory serves me there is a difference between right and left mounts. There may be an "L" and R" stamped on them I THINK.

Flip it right to left.

If you have original style rear mounts left and right are the same.

The only thing I can think of is a sagging (bent) frame. Although I may be wrong. It may also be that the wood and/or rubber mounts for the body are compressed or missing. How does the hood fit at the cowl?

There is no body on it--just a rolling chassis, and the frame has been straightened. Upon closer inspection, I think the problem is that I adjusted the pedal to cross-shaft clevis to accommodate a fully returned pedal. I also discovered that when the X-shaft hits, it only touches the bottom of the right radius rod where it bolts to the torque tube. It would be nice to rotate the tt about 2 degrees counter clockwise.

I think when you get the body mounted it is going to change the angle of
the torque tube and give you more clearance.

Original style rear mounts or Float-A-Motor ?
Check you FRONT engine mount. Does the center of the crank pully align correctly with the front spring starter crank bearing? It could be that the front of your engine is too high.

Original mounts. I thought about the front being too high, but I never removed the front mount--only removed the two bolts into the block. The alignment of the crank pulley with the crank bearing is spot-on. Will wait until brakes are all rebuilt and adjusted to see if this may be a non-problem.
