Question Extra quart of oil with oil filter system?

Just thinking as my engine just about ready to start. Should I fill the newly installed oil filter system with an extra quart of oil?

Considering that it is an 8BA, fill it with 5 qts., check the level, it should read at around or slightly above the full mark.
If so, add a qt. for the original filter.

I put the filter element in the canister and then poured oil into the canister to fill it.

Kube, original style bypass 1949 8BA. Sounds like fill with usual oil amount then put filter in canister & fill oil canister with oil.
Thx think I got it.

You don't have to add oil to the filter canister. Just put 5 quarts into the pan and run it.

In thinking about it Probably if you fill the canister with an extra quart gravity will drain it into the crank case over filling?

The canister's oil return path is through two small holes in the center tube. These holes are near the top of the tube. So I think gravity will only drain down about 1 inch of oil at the top of the canister.

Hi Jay, I think the oil system you refer to might be the aftermarket type for converting to screw on modern filter conversion. They’re the only ones I’ve seen with the intake & output ports side by side at the upper part of it. The original oil filter bypass set up I’ve got is like the one in the pic shows the path back to the crankcase from the bottom of the filter. Which I think will drain the canister slowly into the crankcase when engine is not running which I don’t think is a big deal as the bypass system’s 1/16” orifice restricting the amount of oil to the filter forces more of the oil thru the engine components as per the Design of the Bypass System on startups.

No, talking about the stock filter canister. Return line drains center tube of canister by gravity. But oil can only get into the center tube through the two small holes at top of tube. So most of the canister remains full of oil. There was discussion of this here a few months ago. I searched but, sorry, could not find it quickly.

Jay, Thx for the explanation! So your in the ‘go with an extra quart in the canister’ as most of the oil stays in it?

You could, but I think no need to pre-fill the canister. I think posts #6 & 7 above have it. The canister will fill as engine turns. The restriction in the filter supply line holds back oil going to the canister so engine maintains oil pressure. Re-check oil level on dipstick afterwards.

This subject has been approached so many times, it has become laughable. To me at least.
So many opinions yet so little actual research.
It's five quarts. Bob keeps his trophy.

This is the one thing I hate about flatheads. Since I don't want to leave even a pint of dirty oil in the engine when I change it, I always clean out the cannister. I get most of it out with a turkey baster and then use paper towels to get the dregs. Everything else is good; the filter cannister is upright and conveniently located and the fill tube is right where I want it, but sopping the remaining oil out of the cannister is a pain!

Anthony, this is what the canister looks like inside (drawing) and a photo by a Barn member (51merc I think).

Do like Kube says. Adding a quart of oil separately to the filter canister is a very "messy" idea.
Don't do it.
