Water pump and fan
After reading many comments about the dangers of original fans, I decided to get an aluminum one before the car is all put together. The present fan appears to be an original two blade, and there is no hint of any defect. In order to remove the fan I had to remove the water pump, and now wish to determine what I have. Mine does not have a stainless steel shaft, it has a sealed bearing in the nose with a snap ring, the impeller has the letter N cast into it, and the pump to head gasket looks new-ish with blue RTV. There is a good description of several leakless ones by Jason of TX from 11 yrs ago, but I don't see a match with mine, especially the stainless shaft. It definitely appears to be of recent manufacture, but if it needs rebuilding, now is the time. Any thoughts?

Re: Water pump and fan
How do you know the shaft is not stainless? Some varieties of stainless alloy are magnetic.
Take the snap ring off and pull the shaft. That will tell you what you have. If leakless type then examine the seal and shaft where the seal rides for wear. Replace if worn. Also check the bearings for roughness. Replace if in doubt.
