Default Accelerator linkage

1936 Model 68. The linkage from the accelerator linkage on firewall that connects to carb is too long and has been bent in a curve to compensate by previous owner. Ordered a 10.5 “ and it’s about 1.5” too long. Does 8.5” sound standard? According to what I’ve read 10.5” is standard. Do I need to make one or is something maybe not right at the firewall?… Greg

Needs a shorter rod that fits. Or the linkage on the firewall is bent.

Talking Re: Accelerator linkage

I was trying to see if the linkage at the firewall on yours is all parallel but the glare from your shining paint is prohibiting me.

If ok, cut the long rod to size, thread the ends and make a little turnbuckle to adjust. You can see the aluminum turnbuckle in the photo. Both ends of the turn buckle are RH threads with a dab of Locktite, if needed.

This is an 8BA in a 40 but, idea will also work for you.

Ok, Thanks. I’ll head scratch tomorrow. If it looks better I’ll post results and symptoms….. Greg in Tennessee

The throttle rod for a 1935-36 ford is standard at 10.5" long. I note you have the incorrect carb on your manifold. Should be a Stromberg 97 which has a different throttle linkage to your 94 carb. The linkage on a 34 Ford is 9.45"long. Not all of these different length linkages are available to buy today. You could make up the linkage for your car by cutting your rod in the center and welding to suit length and file down and paint with silver paint. Regards, Kevin

Need a much better pic of your engine. Maybe your carb is a 97, not sure. Maybe your firewall linkage is out of position or bent from its standard position. Post better pics please. Regards, Kevin.

Here is a summary of throttle rod lengths compiled from drawings at The Benson Ford Research Center.

Here is how its supposed to look.Although the car is a '33 the engine is a 36 w/34 intake and 97 carb.Disregard the hose lying on the intake in front of the fuel pum.

I'll get better pictures today. I hope it’s a 97, it had a big 97 on the side of it. I used a rebuild kit for a 97. Checking linkage at firewall today, Thanks all….. Greg in Tennessee

Trying to find specs of linkage length from pedal to pivot at firewall, looks too long. Waiting on a second set of eyes, sucks when you can’t see both sides of firewall at same time. Here are better pictures.

Yep, 10.5” link rod is stock length but something is out of alignment about 1/2”

The rod should be longer than the measurement between balls as they now sit so that there is pressure keeping the throttle closed.

I had a similar problem so, I cut it to fit & covered the weld with shrink tube. Paint the rod black. works just fine & looks OK.

It will definitely have pressure on it, I can’t snap ends on by hand I may use pliers and a little force and quit over thinking it. Gotta have a bigger hammer! …. Greg in Tennessee

Those ends should snap on with very little effort.

To be clear, the linkage ends will snap easily onto the ball ends of carb or pedal linkage, just have to put so much backward force on the pedal ball end after connecting to carb I can tell something isn't quite right.

That arm is spring loaded. Any play on the inside floor pedal linkage?
