I was fortunate to see the whole collection prior to the 2005 Western National and also prior to his first liquidation/sell off. It was quite the collection for sure!! I have plenty of photos from that trip

I saw the complete collection in '05 also . Ron hosted a BBQ at his place for the V-8ers attending the Western National Meet. A very impressive collection and most cars were original and not restored. Ron Thorne is a very nice guy and a real gentleman.

Those are some nice cars for sure. One thing I did notice was that the air cleaner isn't positioned correctly on the 1934 Victoria.

Rock, I drove a tan '37 Ford Club Coupe. There were several of us from the California Bay Area that year. It was a great meet (actually all of them are great fun).

The $150 charge just to be a non-winning online bidder sure is a scam. Yes, I know other major auction houses do the same.

The bidder's registration fee keeps it real for serious bidders only.

Nothing about the Ron Thorne collection is less than first class.

Not sure I agree. There is the registration fee of $150 from everyone and then there is the consignment fees on the back end if you win a bid. Asking money just to join is a money grab in my opinion and just a way to get more cash from anyone who "walks" in the door.

Think about the relationship between a final selling price of an auctioned car, and the composition of the bidders. Without the registration fee, hoards of unqualified bidders drive up an unrealistic value, basically just having fun at the expense of the serious bidders. There are men who earn a living doing just that. Those men are called shills, and can make the difference between a sale and no sale, often far beyond any actual bidding competition.

I have not been to a live Mecum or Barett-Jackson auction, but I thought you have to prove some type of financial viability before you're allowed to have a paddle. That's all that should be asked.

If being a shill is a business, that $150 ain't going to stop them if they can make a tidy profit.

I'm of the opinion that all of these reality and non-stop Barret-Jackson auction shows are only feeding this crazy notion.

I know others may not agree, but the 20-25% consignment fee and other related fees the auction houses charge should leave plenty of meat on the bone for them to make their money. They don't need it on the back of interested parties.

I think you misunderstood my post. Shills are hired by auctioneers to create a sense of competition among the real bidders. I only mentioned shills to show that the effect is similar to what a few unqualified joy seekers can do to an auction. They bid for the thrill and in the hope that they can win a bargain. I totally agree about the reality TV auctions. Bad for the hobby.

Contact the Early Ford V-8 Foundation -- I believe they sent out a promo from WWA saying that there was a special for Early Ford V-8 members -- no bidder fee.

I got the memo -- but since I wasn't going to be in AZ until NASCAR got there in March, I tossed it. Maybe they still have the information. AND.......maybe you also have to be a member of the Foundation?

You have to present a bank letter guaranteeing your highest bid.

The proof-of-funds weeds out the non-serious bidders.

A "serious bidder" is going to be willing to pay whatever their own personal maximum is, regardless of whether other "serious bidders" or non-serious bidders caused it to be reached. Everyone is looking for a bargain, even "serious bidders".

Shills hired by the auction company aren't going to be affected by the registration fee or a proof-of-funds requirement.

Charging $150 just for the "pleasure" of bidding from one's home computer is just a money grab.

Auctions are a business that serves a need, and they are very good at what they do. They have a magnetism that turns spectators into bidders, and they use every tool at their disposal to do exactly that. Shills are a reality in the business of auctions and for that matter, in the business of sales of all manner of products from snake oil to real estate.

It's a business interested in maximizing revenue. They do what the market will bear. It's a way of getting some revenue from non-bidders. They make the rules. We can either participate or not as we choose.

Look at post #12, I posted a few pictures......"maybe" a folkstone grey 40 behind the "modern" T-Bird. ANYWAY sorry our paths didn't cross. FUNNY, everyone is "WOW-ing" over but just a smattering of the whole collection you and I had the privilege of seeing....I wonder what the comments would have been had they seen it in it's entirety.

Here is the hyperlink: https://worldwideauctioneers.com/sco...-2022/results/ The Thorne collection is not listed separately.

That was a first rate collection. Hard to pick a favorite, but I liked the 50 Marc convert and the 32 phaeton.
