All-weather car cover suggestions
Looking for a quality, all-weather, durable car cover for my '40 2 door sedan. Unfortunately, my car is being stored outdoors under a steel carport for the time being. Cheap, light-duty covers just don't do the job as well as I would like, so hoping to get some feedback from others about other options. The main criteria is that it be as WATERPROOF as possible.
Thanks to all. |

Re: All-weather car cover suggestions
I'd like to offer my .02¢ here... while storing your car outdoors is problematic in itself, covering it can easily compound the inherent issues.
Trapping moisture beneath the cover is far worse than allowing the car to be exposed and breathe naturally. If you can keep the sun off of your car, that's perhaps the best thing to be done. Water and snow won't hurt the car very noticeably. Trapping moisture will cause damage. The cover moving due to wind will most certainly scuff paint.

Re: All-weather car cover suggestions
Would it be possible to buy some 1x4 lumber and using sheetrock type screws, fasten 3 or four canvas tarps around the perimeter? If they don't go all the way to the ground, that's ok too. I have a metal carport that was open on four sides, but made a wall on the windward side. Here our damp weather comes mostly from the same direction, so one wall works quite well. I would stay away from cheap plastic tarps for many reasons. Tractor supply and others sell treated, tan colored real canvas tarps.

Re: All-weather car cover suggestions
Years ago a buddy made a cover for his ski boat using emt fittings and pipe and a silver heavy duty tarp tarp. Secret was to keep it small enough to cover the boat but not so high so the wind has less of a chance to get under it and blow it into the neighbors yard. He used cement filled 5 gallon buckets for anchor weights.

I certainly have some good feedback to think about - some options I hadn't considered. Appreciate all the replies.

Re: All-weather car cover suggestions
I have had several Cal car covers. My cars were stored outdoors in Socal, and indoors in the high dessert. Noah is my choice fabric.

Re: All-weather car cover suggestions
If your car is outdoors on the bare ground, be sure to place cover the ground where it sits with a large piece of plastic to act as a moisture barrier so evaporating water won't rise up and rust the underside of the car.

If you decide to go with a car cover, by all means DO NOT go anywhere near "Sealskin" company ! You will regret it the rest of your life !

Re: All-weather car cover suggestions
California Car cover is by far the best choice. You will find they offer a light weight water repelling cover that's outstanding. Its not cheap in cost but its well worth the protection your looking for.

All-weather car cover suggestions
There is no alternative for fully enclosed
climate controlled storage for any vehicle you value. Any waterproof cover will not allow ground moisture to naturally evaporate and promote mold - mildew - rust. Any car cover will rub the paint off. I don’t put car covers on vehicles I transport in my enclosed trailer for that reason. An inflatable fully enclosed cover requires electricity to keep it inflated - and - depending on the amount of rain or snow you get - will not really last. Either rent a space or build one … 💡 Jim |

This is spot on! Also, if the website does not answer ALL your questions, pick up the phone & call them! They have great customers service reps who are car guys as well. The times I have called over the years, they were always willing to take the time to answer fully! Outdoor covers from a Quality company like California Car Covers are made specifically to address issues that the consumer would face when storing their collector cars outside. Moisture wicks away quickly & mold is non existent. Ground moisture is no more of an issue than parking the car outside uncovered, because the cover does NOT stop air flow below the car. Quality covers are Make/Model specific, are custom fitted with elastic front & back with a cable under the center to keep wind from getting under the cover.
