1930 Cabriolet 68B and model A frame questions
I am restoring this car and was wondering what these square holes are for in the cowl. It also is missing the bead that runs vertical up the cowl and across the gas tank for the cowl band. I also have a frame that does not line up with the Tudor body that came with it. The 2 mount holes under the cowl do not line up. All of the other holes line up except these 2. All help is appreciated.

the two mounting holes that don't line up are probably because its a 31 frame. only two of the 4 line up.

The body that came on the frame is a late 31 tudor.

Starting with the introduction of the Victoria (October 30?), Ford put the 31 style frame into all production. The 2/3 (rear cowl) holes were moved rearward to meet the holes on the slant cowls. You will also have 3 holes just ahead of the rear running board where the #6 body mount would be place only for slant bodies and was installed on the line.
You can use this frame with your cabriolet with no changes. Ford used this frame for all bodies. |

MrFirebird. It appears that Stinch was asking about the same square holes in the cowl. Apparently that is an early 1930 feature which used a cowl band that was held on by 6 bolts, 3 on each side. You can read his thread here:

Re: 1930 Cabriolet 68B and model A frame questions
As Elrod stated, the three square holes in the leading edge of the cowl are for a special type of cowl band found only in early 1930 (possibly late '29???). The band is flush with the bottom of the cowl and does not use the threaded rod that is found on many other cowl bands.
I don't have any idea what type of bolts was used in the channel of the cowl band but it looks like a properly sized/modified carriage bolt would work perfect. The square shoulder found on carriage bolts would fit into the square cowl hole very nicely. Rich

Are these the two bolts for the cowl? If so, they attach to a bracket that is mounted to the outside of the frame.

Re: 1930 Cabriolet 68B and model A frame questions
It would be nice to see an original cowl band to see the mounting bolts. O agree that modified carriage bolts would work. As far as the frame goes I will be looking for a non slant windshield frame for the Tudor sedan that I am also working on. Thanks for all the info!

Re: 1930 Cabriolet 68B and model A frame questions
See my websiete, www.plucks329s.org, for your frame issues. It is all explained in the article.
As far as there being no "rib's" to hold your cowl band on...that is tru only for those first production 1930 models and yes they take a special cowl band with special brackets to hold it in place going along the upper cowl section of the tank itself. All this will be brought out in the November/December issue of Model A News plus ma ton of other items on the gas tank proper. Pluck |
