'40 coupe - installing dash/glove compartment
I am in progress of off-frame resto...the steering gear/column is installed and leaning down. The next step is to set the dash in place; I've done that for trial.
Q: should the dash be installed first and the glove box later? or is there room to install the glove box to the dash and install them together. comments ? thanks again, fordman |

Re: '40 coupe - installing dash/glove compartment
Hi Fordman
I would recommend installing the dash as light as possible, it makes it easier to install the guage set secured but I let my hang secured to a bolt on the firewall, my wiring was connected, It takes some work crawling up under but my seat was outside the car during install, install the 2 bolts on either side then 1 screw on top to hold it there....that way the dash can be moved around to see if the bolts near windshield line up, hope this helps...Gump

Re: '40 coupe - installing dash/glove compartment
Be sure to put some friction tape between the dash and the body to prevent squeaks. Put the dash in first and then install the glove box and gauges.

Re: '40 coupe - installing dash/glove compartment
I've restored numerous '40 Fords to very high standards and I have always found it easier to assemble the dash as much as possible prior to installing it to the body.
If you attempting a high point restoration, then any time you can lessen the chance of scratching something, the better. Plus, fitting everything to the dash prior to its subsequent assembly to the body allows you to fit things that much more carefully. That, in turn, makes for a neater appearance. Installing a glove box liner, hinge and door is much easier when al is upon your bench. same goes for the light switches, gauge cluster, etc.
