Body Re assembling after paint 38

Getting close to finishing the paint on my body panels,thinking ahead to re assembly of the fenders hope fully with minimum or no scratching and gouging..


my guess first put on the running boards then rear fenders but on the front is it best to bolt the inner fender panels to the frame then the fenders over them or bolt the inner fenders panels to the fenders and go in assembled?


just curious of anyone that's been there and done this ,,thanks ahead

Get the entire front clip on including the hood, adjusted properly and tight. THEN the running boards and lastly, the rear fenders.

I have the front fenders and inner panels assembled prior to installation. There is a piece of anti-squeak material between these two components that I believe would be tougher to install once the inner panel is on the car.
Been there, done this more times than I can recall...

I should have added that you may find the need to loosen the lower bolts to body of the front fenders when you install the boards. LOOSEN.
Still, I have done a few 39 standards that are quite similar to your 38 and I would not do it in any other sequence.

Again thanks much Kube ,,good info,, Im basing your sequence vs how I disassemble it after a final fit up and there was more bumping and scraping going on especially with the front fenders then I would want to see after the paint is on

I always open up certain holes on the fenders and grille to make alignment so much easier. When everything is zipped up, there is no way to see that the holes were opened a bit. It may be difficult to believe but an 1/8" increase in diameter at some of those holes makes life so much easier.

Kube I will do that before I paint to make life a little bit easier ,,it took many hours to get things lined up,,I gave up on the side panel to the fender on the passenger side got it very close maybe with opening up the holes it will get me spot on

Now I'm confused. A 38 standard open car in the USA?

,,Long story but bought it back in 1993 ,,it was right hand drive and from what I gather from Argentina ,it was a deluxe but the front fender were really wasted ,,found a decent set of standard fenders,side panels,and grill off a standard in the mid 90s and always did like how it resembled the 37 ..

Ah, makes sense. I had to ask. If I money were no object, and one still exists, I would own a 38 standard roadster as built down under.

Aline the hood first and work yourself off the hood as mentioned. At least I learned this from my 38 truck, being everything is dependent on the radiator, grill, and hood placement.

There are not many old Fords as rare as this beauty.

I remember when I was a kid there was a big discussion in the letters column in Hot Rod magazine about whether they made a '37 roadster or not, and now someone comes up with a '38.

Trust the Aussies to do things a little bit differently. They kept making roadsters in 1939 and again in 1940. USA stopped after 1937.
