Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Bob,
Folks, Thanks I will check that out too! - removed broken bolt in flywheel, easy out worked for once! - cleaned up pressure plate and flywheel, will take them to another tool shop that may be able to machine them fairly quickly. lots of heat checks: This is the one from the truck. it looks a little newer than the Engine #2 pressure plate. Clutch plate was glazed in this picture, I scuffed it up a bit: Worked on the south wall of the shop on and off! Weather was 70 degrees and awesome! Will swing by the machine shop and pick up the crank pulley and stem. Also the exhaust/ intake manifold. He can begin work pressure testing Block #1. I can start assembling engine #2. I did clean and chase all the head bolt fine threads. Regards, Chris -

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
When you have the flywheel surfaced be sure they take the same amount off
the area the pressure plate bolt to as they do from rest of the flywheel. Last edited by Bob C; 09-03-2021 at 10:30 AM. |

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Bob,
Thanks that makes good sense. Then the pressure plate will have the same pressure on the clutch disc instead of less! I had not thought of that. But like a lot of things that you change, something else is affected too. Regards, Chris

Chris . . . being a man of a few years . . . you may need to "soak your gaskets" a bit longer than the young fellers.

They are soaking now . May be a few days before the are needed. If the Ford gods, look favorably on me!. I may have a source to bore the block #2 to .060 over. Have valve seat tooling setting here. Which I have never used! Have the pressure plate out at another machine shop. Worked on the south wall wood last few days. Just finished that! Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Chris,
Depending on the amount removed from the two surfaces of the flywheel, the risk of shearing a pressure plate bolt because of it bottoming out in its hole rises accordingly. During the course of the '32 model year Ford increased the depth of those holes to minimize that possibility. |

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
^^ In the case of the above, from first principles try the bolts in the holes first without the pressure plate or spring washers and see if when bottomed, the gap under the head is less than the thickness of the pressure plate and spring washer.
Worth trying in any circumstance when putting something together. |

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Thanks for the heads up on this bolt issue. One was already broke off when I got it. And I did break a bolt in a tractor flywheel one time too. I will try to watch this hole depth.
I did plasti-gage all the rods and caps from both engines,on the #2 engine crank. They all have a fair amount of babbit remaining. with the rods from #1 engine having about .0015 to .002 clearance and the # 2 engine rods which were on this crank had about .003 clearance. So I guess either set of rods might work If this #2 engine would get assembled. Worked on wood most of the day, going up the right side of the stairwell. Happy Labor Day! Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Folks,
Very quiet in The land of the 32! Holiday and all, it got a rest. Lets recap briefly since this truck came home with me: -Brakes drums removed, reviewed and repaired. -Brake rod pivots reworked, with new pins -Seat frames built and springs attached. -Tires removed, rims cleaned, lock rings restored. -New Firestones (7) mounted and in position. -Galion dump bed attached to the truck frame -#1 engine and transmission removed -#2 engine secured -#2 block repaired due to freeze crack - adjustable lifters installed in #2 engine - New Radiator secured - Rod bearing clearance checked on #2 crank. - Gasket kit secured. - Flywheel in for leveling. - Front crank pulley and sleeve from #1 engine installed on #2 crank. - correct headlights for the 32. I continue to lower my expectations for this truck to move on its own this fall. It could happen but the stars will need to align! Thanks for checking in on me. I have been busy trying to consume the hemlock wall coverings to allow some space for things (tractors) to eventually come inside this winter too. I now have a plan for most of it! Is there a place where I could just order a set of rings for my .060 over sized pistons? These are 4 ring sets per piston compared to the Hastings which are only three sets per piston? I dont know what brand these pistons are but they do have a machined split in the sides. Regards, Chris

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Folks,
Tidbits of info on the 32 truck project: Had the block at a friends that may be able to bore it. He thinks it will clean up at .060 oversize. I am going to visit Snyder's in the morning and pick up some items that may allow me to have a chance to assemble engine # 2 in the not so distant future. Broke off a head stud removing them. Drilled it out and re tapped. I did remove the valves from engine #2 and the tool to remove the split guides worked very well! Will try to get these seats reground. Got a call from the machine shop that they may get to the flywheel tomorrow. Stopped at the upholstery shop and he was working on the seat back for the 32. Maybe we can at least do some bench racing?? The plot thickens! Regards, Chris

Mart,
I tend to way over book myself. I really liked your hill climb in your 32 sedan! Awesome road coarse! You took us on a nice journey with that one! I do need you here working on my truck full time! Off to Snyder's for New old Ford stuff! Regards, Chris

Looks like you’ve got a least two drivers waiting to get behind the wheel of your BB dump truck.

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Corvette8n,
Yes the two great grandsons, would be the ones I would like to see drive this truck when it is 100 years old! (0r sooner!!) Off to Youngstown Ohio again this morning to visit Snyder's. The guy that bored the block had a minor problem and bored it over size more than expected. So I will pick up another set of pistons and make another stab at this old engine repair. Several other items I need to get, as I think through the engine assembly process too. Good to have these folks with quality parts not too far away. i also plan to work on the valve seats in this block, more on that later. Pulled tractors last night and my tractors did ok which means they did not break down and they did not come in last. We had fun. Will pull Allis tractors again Friday night at Spartansburg PA fair. (Allis WD45 and Allis D-17). Regards, Chris

I'm no machinist and I'm sure that you checked your guy out BUT I'd be concerned about the mistake in boring. Usually the block is bored once you actually have the pistons to insure the proper clearance.

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
On a '32-'34 V8 block that could be a fatal mistake leading to having to sleeve the block to save it; Fortunately, at + .060, there's lots left in a B's block cylinders.

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
And, I agree with the 'I agree'. Hard for me to understand an experienced engine machinist doing this. And.... the guys that have bored for me, kind of 'sneak up on it', meaning they purposely bore a little short, then use the hone to finish at the actual size they want. And, yes, pistons need to be in hand....
Needless to say, I'd be PO'd. I've had a lot of engines bored, and never this problem. I might be begging Egge for custom pistons -- not sure they do that, but at least I'd try. Last edited by bobH; 09-09-2021 at 03:45 PM. |

Re: 1932 The Deuce, Dually, Dump Truck
Folks,
Thanks for the concerns on the engine. The guy doing the work understands he made mistakes. I may have made the biggest one trying to rush this work too. I take full responsibility. Not all things work out as planned. This engine has been a challenge. I have learned a lot. It will be interesting to see the outcome. I know your concerned and I was too. The guy was/ is trying to do me a favor that may not end well? Recovery is everything! Was invited to tour Snyder's museum today and it was well worth the drive just for that! Fantastic collection of mid 60's muscle cars along with Model A's B, and older T's also! Will try to load some pictures! Regards, Chris
