Default Series of questions on timing gear replacement

I recently opened my timing cover for the first time and found that the timing gear had some degraded teeth and the camshaft nut had been beat to hell by a previous owner, so I decided to replace it. Some questions:
  1. There seems to be a LOT of end play in the camshaft, like it slides back and forth a good .2" or so. Is that normal? I realize the thrust plunger is supposed to hold it in, I was just surprised.
  2. Assuming I get this gear out, any tips on installing the new one (other than making sure to line up the timing mark)? Should I pre-grease? Should I put anti-seize on the new camshaft nut?

Thanks in advance.
