Default C69A oil pump

I forgot to take a pic of the oil pump before I put the sump on and wanted to ask a Q.

I believe this engine is a 46 Canadian truck engine.

The pump has an extension sticking out the side of the housing, I guess for an inbuilt relief valve.

Also when checking it besides a standard pump, the gear housing looks bigger , so am assuming it is higher volume..

And the engine also has the normal relief valve/spring at the rear valve chamber.

Is all of this normal ?

The engine will have a relief valve/spring at FRONT valve chamber. Otherwise, everything else you've described is right.

An 8BA type pump may have been installed but with out a photo it can't be confirmed. These old motors have a lot of interchangeability if you have all the right parts. There are several different pumps that will fit the 59 family of engines whether made in US or elsewhere.

Relief valve springs all tend to get weak over the years. This is
both the ones in the front of the engine and in the oil pumps.
So with two relief valves the top pressure is dependent on the
valve with the weakest spring. I built a test fixture to test every
oil pump before putting it in the engine, they are to hard to
replace after being installed. Stretching the springs in the valve
don't work, I use a spacer made of 1/8th inch pipe and start out
with one about 5/16" long. The one in the front can be tested in
the engine. Remove the spark plugs and with a mechanical pressure
gauge installed spin the engine with 12 volts and the pressure you
see will be what you have at 45 to 50 MPH. I found on the tester
even the old early pumps will put out over 75lbs if they are working.
It's a lot easier to know how your oil pressure will be before every-
thing is bolted up. This can even be done with the engine sitting on
the floor. G.M.

Please post a pic of your oil pump testing set up. Sounds like something I need to build.

t's basically a plastic sleeve that is a force fit over the 2 pump
mounting diameters with an outlet in the center. G.M.
