Default Generator Pulley Missing Coolaing Vanes

I had my generator and starter rebuiktca few weeks back, and now just noticed that 3 of the 8 cooling vanes on the back of the pulley have broken off. Is this serious enough in to affect the cooling performance? Of so, I’m wondering if I can add enough brazing rod to rebuild them.

I would be concern with balance and cooling. If it were mine I would replace it.

Call VanPelt or Third Gen....I'm sure if you send a photo they'll have what you need.

With three blades missing, depending on their relative location to each other, cooling isn't your main problem. Think of the speed the generator turns at, and unless those missing blades are equally spaced, the generator will shred itself due to vibration. JMO

Thanks. Honestly, I didn’t even think of the balance aspect of things. I guess I’ll just have to order one.

Wonder what caused those vanes to break off? In any case, you don't
want shrapnel flying into your hood and radiator or YOU.

I would say they broke upon installation. G.M.

I have no idea how they broke. Purchased the engine back in 2018 and it was pieces. I never really looked at it prior to bringing it to the shop to have it rebuilt. I'm a bit surprised they would have rebuilt it with the missing vanes.

I would check with the shop and see what they have to say.

Is it a cast pulley or stamped steel?

It's the cast one. I’ll try to upload some pics from my iPhone.

Someone may have used the vanes as a fulcrum to lift the generator up higher for increased belt tension. Or, worse yet, tried to use vanes as a leverage point to rotate the crank.

That pulley needs to go in file 13 . Post on the wanted listing for a new one.

Yes, it's been "pulled" too far.

Or to hold the pulley from turning when taking the nut off during disassembly? Steve

There is no nut on the shaft. I think the pulley is threaded onto the shaft.

Good chance the rebuilder might have another pulley laying around.
