Default hub cap tool

Just out of curiosity, how does a 'hub cap tool' such as sold by Mike's work exactly? Installation is basically bending the tabs over securely, correct? I must be missing something(?).

The tool gives the tabs a slight V shape so the cap can be pushed on and snapped off.

Thanks Tom. If I could ask for a personal opinion, worth the fifty bucks? Bruce

I know others will suggest glueing them on with silicone or rubber bands but after you lose a couple of hub caps or mess up the paint on your wheels from a cap chattering around you"ll think $50 is cheap. The "Tool" bends five of the 10 tabs to the correct shape to hold the caps on. I have also saved a few caps that had all of the tabs bent.

If you have any friends with '30-31 Model A's you could all "chip in".

I have not had a problem with a hub cap since I bought the "Tool" last July and have "Fixed" several for friends.

I'd like to have one for my 1928, but they don't exist.

Before I was aware the "tool" was available, I made it work using a 3/8 coupling nut. You screw a short bolt into each end so the contraption matches the diameter of the cap. Then place it between two opposing tabs. When you tighten one of the bolts it spreads the tabs to where you want them. Slow and clumsy, but it works.

I never used the tool, so I can't offer an opinion.
