Default 9 super 7

I recently had the occasion to build a 3x2 setup for a customer. We used
the 9 super 7 Speedway carbs as part of an intake/ carb/ linkage/fuel line
deal. I will say that the carbs functioned just fine and the package deal
included every widgit imaginable. The carbs come complete as singles and
had to be be converted to run as 3x2's. The middle carb required rejetting
and the end carbs required the bases changed to those supplied with no
idle circuits.
As a matter of course I always install any carb I touch on my test motor
to check for function and leaks etc. As I said before ,the carbs worked
great BUT ALL 3 LEAKED from #1 & #3 brass plug. Further investigation re-
vealed the center plugs on all 3 carbs were loctited in place to stop leaks
there. The gaskets on 1 & 3 plug were soft nylon while the center was
the more typical fiber. The leaks varied from a small steady drip to an
annoying weep.
Because of the deadline I repaired the problem myself rather than send-
ing the carbs back. What I found was the gasket faces on the 3 plug
holes were not flat and off square to the 3/8 - 24 thread from .008 to
.020.
Their use of the soft nylon gaskets and locktite as a solution was regret-
table. It's nice to have a decent shop to address problems such as this
especially considering a no time to spare dead line. I fixtured the bowls
and spot faced the plug gasket faces flat and square to the threads.
I have discussed this situation with Speedway and will forward to them
digital photos etc. They were aware of the problem but were under the
assumption the nylon gaskets had adequately addressed it.
I am a loyal Speedway customer and will remain so.

Charlie, I had a discussion with your Hershey neighbor, Speedy Bill himself, last October in the Red Field at Hershey. He flat out denied that Speedway was having any problems, matter-of-fact he said they never had any problems whatsoever with their 9 super 7 carburetors. I told him that I had read all of the problem reports and published articles comparing their carb to the English made 97's and to properly rebuilt original 97's. He still denied ever having any of these problems. He said his 9 Super 7's were doing so well and selling so fast that he can't keep them in stock on their shelves. I buy a lot of things from Speedway and I have never had a problem dealing with them but I would not recommend buying their 9 Super 7 carburetors until they admit their problems and somehow prove to me that they have fixed them. I bought three 9 super 7 and they all had issues. I read some of the test reports about the carbs and they described the problems correctly. I was disappointed with the purchase. I think I will send them to kenct and see if he can fix the problems when I have some money.

All three plugs leaked, the butterfly did not close in the same location all of the time and the floats were not set correctly were some of the original problems.

Sturg,
If you can't find anyone else I'll do them.
I was a bit apprehensive about posting the 9 super 7 blurb and I only
did because the purpose of the Barn is to get the word out. We all have to eat
crow once in awhile but it's usually because we are attempting to breath life into
70 year old carbs etc. Speedways 9 super 7 are brand new and the video they
have on their website touts them as having been leak tested, among other virtues.
Trust me on this...the gasket faces on the bowl are so far off only a
milling machine and a good holding fixture can make them right. This ain't no
drill press job.

PS:
I'd love to have Speedway weigh in on this situation....right here on
the Barn!

Send them directly to Speedy Bill's attention outlining all the problems. Maybe that will snap him out of denial.

I seriously doubt that. There have been tons of people on the HAMB try to get resolution out of Speedway. Every time its the carbs are perfect its the installer.

I have taken a few of them apart to try and fix them but there are gross mechanical problems with the castings over multiple sets that I have seen. I have yet to see a single set run out of the box correctly or even run well with tons of tuning time.

Seriously better off finding worn out originals and refurbish them then dealing with the Speedway ones.

I take offence to the comment that 70+ year old Stromberg are all leakers..I will agree to that if the rebuilder doesn't know his A.... for a hole in the ground...
I know several people who run the new the 9super7 and have "NO" issues.. I also know of some that have had issues.. The only problem that I've seen in the 9super7 is the accelerator pump is weak and will fall apart, I have replaced two for my friends..
Charlie is the person to mix the problems..
My 9 cents..
Duane..

speed away from speedway............
I've used the edelbrock once so far and they're happy with it. I had no problems tuning it, but it does have an aluminum base and no bushings (but I think it will take a LONG time to wear out).

I have a set on my 40 and I don't know why they still leak by needle and seat. You would think they could make them hold 6psi fuel pressure like the regular carbs do.That is my only problem. My reg went bad and flooded the engine so bad gas got into the oil pan.

I've got the Edelbrock catalog and they are listed as having Cast Iron bases.
Is this an error, or did they change production after they published the catalog?

My original 97's do not leak at all, its in the fuel pressure and assembling them correctly.

There are a few how to's on the HAMB. My favorite trick is a piece of glass and high grit sandpaper to lap the serufaces that mate and not over torquing the bolt.

I will admit they could use another bolt or two in the original design to spread out the load but thats a personal opinion.

Not sure but it's an aluminum base for sure, also they didn't come with the arm if you wanted to use it as a single carb (stock replacement). Parts store had to get the edelbrock rep involved and it still took some work.
Customer bought it through a parts store ( I wanted to use a HAMB vendor), so they dealt with finding the correct arm.

Yep, I just got a copy of Hot Rod, and now they are advertising the aluminum bases.
I wonder if they ever made them cast iron?
Back to the subject of 97's, what are good rebuilt originals going for?

I brought this thread back to the top because a guy on the model "A" forum said he only read good things about the supper 9-7 carbs on the HAMB. He is from Durango, Colorado.
